Yes, I see that also Yuri. But now I have a question, too. Since this was parachuting through the voluntary OSOAVIAKhIM (pre-DOSAAF), would this also have been part sport (as the cover suggests) and part paramilitary training? I'm thinking that it didn't become an intensive military pre-training organization until after the dates on this document (i.e., once the war broke out).

Regardless, David, you have a very interesting and as far as I know scarce document there. Not many of those "floating" around.:chuckle It's definitely a keeper in my book.:thumbsup

Undoubtedly, aeroclubs very widespread before war involved youth in sports which was at the same time and premilitary preparation...

Re: Help identifying booklet please

Thanks for the information guys! Very interesting. Is there a possibility that he would have served during the great patriotic war as a paratrooper?

David.

Re: Help identifying booklet please

There is a possibility, but impossible to tell from the information presented. Parachuting along with other paramilitary "sports" were encouraged by the Soviet government in the '30's so many civilians wore the parachute badge along with the Voroshilov marksman/GTO/PVKhO badges.

Re: Help identifying booklet please

I think, that was so - all skills such were used in war and nobody would send such expert to be at war in fleet or in tank armies. They participated in military landings, were thrown in rear of the enemy or to partisans...

Re: Translation Help

I often see the words "огнем и колесами", for example in "орудие непосредственной поддержки пехоты и кавалерии огнем и колесами" or "артиллеристы сопровождали их огнем и колесами". How should one translate this? "with guns with wheels"?

Auke "the guns supported with fire and maneuver" would be better, there was no logistical support involved. I assume this dealt with self-propelled artillery so the guns didn't have to be towed, which inevitably left time gaps when advancing infantry wasn't covered due to guns moving to a new firing location.

I've also seen this applied to straight armor, and the word "gusenitsami" (tracks) instead of "wheels", implying to me the author was praising the armor's shock effect by plowing straight into or over the enemy...
