Paul,

Thanks a lot for this very informative reply, I now better understand.

I really hope too, that you could contribute to the forum from time to time.

prices

Paul,

Great to see you on the forum! Even those of us in the cloth world appreciate what you have done for Soviet collecting overall.

I can not figure out those who can not figure out the price increase...supply and demand. As you stated there are more and more requests coming in; higher demand pushes prices higher. Its pretty simple. If those who want to get a $200 medal authenticated can no longer do so by you due to cost, then someone else will offer a cheaper service that will either be accpeted by the community of not. The simple filling of a demand. The idea that you have to do all authentications, all at the old prices is silly...unless you leave your job, family, and move into a Unabomber type cabin.

When I sell a high end uniform or named uniform I offer a COA from me. I explain its my opinion based on what I know, nothing more. The next buyer might think this COA is worth something, another may not. All COAs are opinion and are thus not immune to error.

Hope you stay on the forum. We have been growing and need more at the top of the pyramid.

Paul,
I was wrong. Thank you for contacting us and explaining your situation and reasons to change the prices.
It makes sence for me and most of other people now.
Paul, thank you for work you do. I respect your knowledge and experience.

Hi Paul,

We don't know each other (unfortunately for both of us, I'm sure ... but maybe just for me...), and I have never got an order authenticated by you... as you were difficultly available these last years . But, I discovered your site as soon as 1997 (I so much enjoyed the newsletter!!!) and bought your book as soon as 1998. This book changed my life of Soviet orders collector, really!!!

So, again : Thanks!!!

Now, I just have to say : Welcome to the Forum!!!

The reasons you mention in your message are not only understandable, but excessively "noble". I fully understand and support them.

But, here, we all have a personal life, families, demanding jobs... and we spend time to help, educate, learn, know each other... and create a community / family, because we all share the same passion!!

I fully understand you won't learn a lot from most of us; but, please, from time to time, just pay the Forum a visit. The job made by Art, the Moderators and Members is really worthwile!!!
That's somewhere, part of the "community involvement"...

Last point : I personnally don't hide I'm quite disappointed by these increases of prices... My first order authenticated by you is maybe not for tomorrow morning...
But I fully respect the market laws, and the value given today to such documents. It's now my own responsibility to play it or not.

My only message today, after your own message, is : from time to time, as you certainly will have less orders to authenticate, please, just come amongst us and take time to make us benefit from your knowledge.
We have so many still unanswered questions here!!!

Again, welcome to the Forum!!!

Cheers.

Ch.

PS : Many thanks for the pics "donated" to Art for the homepage of the site.

Paul,

Thanks for taking time to respond to our questions. I am sorry if you felt like you had to defend yourself, because in my opinion you have nothing to prove to anybody.

As a person, trying to balance his family, work, business, music, sports, collecting interests (the list goes on) I understand your dilema. But here's a thought for you - have you ever thought about taking an apprentice, someone interested in the hobby and not connected with the business?

Alexei

Hi Alexei,

Good idea. But, in each Certificate, Paul's personal name is engaged. So, not so easy to delegate the task to an apprentice, in these conditions... And training such an apprentice takes time... Except if this Forum can provide candidates !!!

Cheers.

Alexei,

Excellent idea!
I suppose we all know the reasons why unfortunatelly you can't assume such responsability, even thought I'm sure that all members of this Forum and most certainly many more people out there, would love to see you doing the job, as we all certainly agree that apart from Paul Mc Daniel you are the best guy for the job that we know.

Christophe,

As Paul states in his post I believe he will be doing only authentication for top high-end Soviet awards.
He also says that there are many people out there capable of doing authentication on more common awards.
I'm sure it would be quite easy to resolve the problem you mention, about who would sign such COAs.

Anyway, who else would be more appropriate to the job than Paul Schmitt, co-author of the Guide, with a large experience of working with Paul Mc Daniel, and as far as I know not connected with the business? That would resolve the problem of the time it would take to train an apprentice from zero!

He has been doing a great job as a Moderator of this Forum since he joined and I personnaly find him very capable of assuming that responsability. Moreover I'm sure he has Paul Mc Daniel full trust.

Paul (desantnik), please let us know what you think Thank you.

Just my thoughts,

Dolf

Dolf,

You (and all probably) will laugh!!! I did not realize Paul (Desantnik) is Paul (Schmitt)!!!! and
I'm really too much in my own business...
