Transitional refers to the period from 12/26/91 until new, specifically Russian uniforms came into being. Marc |

era
marc,
i think you need to be a little less literal...i stated 1990-1991 transitional era...if you get technical about it there is no transitional era; it's soviet or not. I like to use transitional era as a description of very late produced soviet items that were used also by the new russian armed forces...if you don't, then don't. Lets keep this thread on point, thanks. DougD |

cap
now, back to the point of the thread...Cageybee, is the cap yours, or are you thinking of buying it? Do you happen (cross my fingers) to have the entire KGB Guard uniform? I have only seen one genuine one in the past 10 years, would love to see a new thread started here on them.
If you have more Guards uniform items, post'em! DougD |

Hi Doug,
The cap is in my collection. I would love to have a complete uniform, but alas... doing this has remained allusive. For me, transitional would not just depend on date of manufacture... but when the item was put into service. If this cap was used after 91, then to me, it would be a transitional piece since Mother Russia was in the process of developing a new identity (for insignia and uniforms) while using current stock of Soviet period “stuff”… until it could be all be replaced with the new “stuff.” One is “lucky” to find Soviet style insignia dated after 1991. I saw a Border Patrol Flag dated 1996 with the old Soviet shield… I should have bought it, but at the time I thought it was too much money.

other thread
Great cap, if you ever get the uniform, please post.
There is another thread on ceremonial or honor units, for the Red Army's Cavalry units. It's an interesting thread, again showing how reality and regulations did not always go together. http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...er-1977-a.html |

your cap is indeed the model used by the honor guard at the Lenin Mausoleum 1988-1993.The manufacture is the same high quality as for generals peaked caps. Do you mind posting a close up of the badge fixed on the crown please? If you can do a pic of the reverse of the badge that would be more helpful... Cheers,OKP. |
