Below is a photo taken from "Inside the Soviet Military", illustrating a general staff academy badge. I would assume that this badge was supplied by the Ministry of Defense. The badge appears in beautiful mint-condition, and bears no scroll. One could easily take a generic academy badge to a plating shop and walk away with a very convincing imitation! I suspect that the authentic badges are pretty much made the same way, so would there really be a difference, other than knowing that your imitation would have 100% *real* gold content?

And here is a badge illustrated in Avers No. 2, #883. The arms of the star extend out to the edges of the badge. The late Soviet badges appear to have smaller stars that don't reach that far, but this badge seems consistent with the early solid silver ones, and the versions right up to the 1960's iron types. The book states that this is a 1948, plated silver badge -- makes sense.
Has anyone seen a general staff academy badge like the ones illustrated in Avers, or Borisov (#327)? Last edited by ibaya; 10-21-2002 at 09:27 PM. |

yes, it is tasty. how did you arrive at the 1946 issue date?
these badges were made of various materials over the course of the years, from sterling silver to plated steel. can you show a reverse of the badge? are there rivets/prongs holding the badge together, or is a screwpost-and-nut assembly? I assume that this is an military engineering academy, any idea which one? |

I was imprecise......1948 to 54 would be more accurate.
I am going by Avers 1 which shows silver badges......after this date they are alloy. Sorry don't know which engineering school. Just picked this one up, it has no academy name....is it general staff? Its quite worn with the hammer and sickle nearly removed.....silver early issue. I have re-read your post and I did not look at your pics the correct way. I now see that the badge is "The generic academy badge" I see this from the one you have posted. Thank you. I have seen this badge also since my last post offered by a well known and respected dealer who is selling a German/nickel silver version.....it made me think and investigate but this one is made of high grade silver ? They do look the same but this is definitely silver. Chris |

Older school Badges
Found these today.....the SVERDLOVVSK anti aircraft school and the SARATOVA artillery school......in great condition......not sure if these are 1938 or 46 issue as Avers No 1 says 38 whilst a certain site of great repute is selling them as 46/50.
Anyway great badges. Cheers Chris |

This is a 50ties badge that did not change its dimensions to a diamond shape.
From the Moscow Military Technical School. Chris |
