Tal,

Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 1962. Specifically for his push to ban nuclear testing. His career was impressive, but he was heavy criticized for his "pro-soviet" views. Perhaps this award was some Soviet award to him in recognition of the Nobel award? you can see his biography on the Nobel E-Museum here:

Gentlemen,

The official name is the International Lenin's Prize "For Strengthening Peace Beetween Nations". It was established in 1949 as the Stalin's Prize and renamed in 1956. It was awarded by a Special Commitee of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet for extraordinary contribution to strengthening peace beetween peoples. Receipients would also receive 25,000 roubles in cash.

Program, International Lenin Prize to financier/statesman/philanthropist Cyrus Eaton,

A recent discovery from ebay:

"Eaton won the much coveted International Lenin Peace Prize "for the promotion of peace among nations."

"The heavy stock paper is printed in blue. The prize was presented to Eaton by D.V. Skobeltzyn, who had just founded the Institute of Nuclear Physics at Moscow University. Inside, there is an explanation as to why a capitalist would be receiving an award that honored the foremost Communist. "

I had one in hands one year ago, tough I'm a little collector. It's a friend of mine who won an auction in Paris, at Drouot. It was the legacy of a french drawer, Jean Effel (say like the tower), who were a sympathetic (but not member) of the french communist party. He was member of the CGT (pro-communist workers syndicate). But he was certainly appreciated, coz Effel received too a friendship between peoples. The Lenin international prize cost him 5000 french francs (750-800euros), with the heavy doc. A little, nice medal, with this heavy, deep gold, very fine stamping.
The friend had the booklet for droujba narodov, the special model like in McDaniels book, but the lot was split and the order was in the hands of a grandpa who didn't mind about it but money. The friend put the droujba in auction with the grandpa, and was blocked for me. I missed the order at 75eur next!

I forgotten: the laurel leaf on ribbon is gold-plated, and oxydizes very fast. The name of recipient was not engraved like it seems on the one showed by Tal.

hello gentlemen, it is never too late...

here's a poor pic digitalized of the Jean Effel set.

this set comes from Effel's legacy, it as been bought at a Hotel Drouot auction in Paris. Only a german collector was on the competition, and the soviet stuff was almost anonymous, as Jean Effel is mainly known and wanted for its numerous drawings here in France.
Some medals have been split from this group (a shame).
My friend wish to sell it in an auction coming next april, by the Etude Cornette de Saint-Cyr (Philippe Roudillon expert), hotel Drouot, Paris.
If I can help some of you for the auction...I think it is too late to get the set off the catalogue. I have no interest in this affair, and I believe the set is genuine. The friend must have the invoice from the first (legacy auction).

I had the price in hands, and saw the typical gold patina, the medal is heavy as she must be, and the laurel on the suspension is heavily patined, as often with the bronze decoration pieces.
I asked my friend to give me other pics...
He tries to sell, and it is not its priority, so the price is an try-out (?), attempt...5000euros, as the set is of the highest rarity.

(((Art, Tal, Alexei, if some comments here are relevant of teh "for sale" section, please PM me , I must give my donation for the forum (waiting for new credit card) and I'll move this if necessary. Thanks!))))

charlet,

As nice as that set is, I don't thing that €5,000 is a realistic price.

Rusty.

I think too the price is steep, I tried to discuss with friends in Paris on a comparison basis between Stalin prize and Lenin Peace prize...about rarity. I never saw a lenin international prize...but I don't monitor enough traditionnal auctions in Europe and USA. The prize is rare however. What could be an estimation? (remember, the friend has already fixed this price for the catalogue, it is not an attempt to probe future buyers! ;))

I would say that this set would be fairly prices in the $4,000 - $5,000 range.
It's not a domestic prize & it's not a military related...
Your friend is looking for a bit over $6,500 which can be achieved in the right marketplace!

Let us know how it turns out.

Rusty.
