DOSAV Membership Badge.

Hi folks

Has anyone got any ideas what DOSAV stands for.

This is an unusual badge not found in any books I have looked at.

It may be for Gliders Troops.

This badge is old, no doubt about that, it has been worn much, no doubt about that.

The pin has been cut down and has deep ingrained patina.

Can't see any reason to fake it, why?

I have never even seen one before........

It is made of a base metal and gilded/bronzed, as looking more closely, silver coloured metal can be seen in places underneath the surface.

The star was at one time red, but what is left is barely visible under a very large magnifying glass.

So in all probabilities I am sure it is genuine

There must have been different variations

Regards Chris

It is not military per se and besides Soviets did not really have glider troops. DOSAV is Voluntary Soviety for Assistaing Aviation. It was soon rolled into DOSAAF, Volutary Society for Assisting Army, Aviation and Fleet. Civilian organization was post-war version of Osoavakhim. It was responsible for pre-miltary training and many military-related side clubs and training.

Chris,

Interestingly enough, the badge that you have posted is supposed to have nice enamel.

I have no doubt that your badge is genuine. I just thought it was interesting that all the enamel is missing. I will check if I have any scans of this badge in my collection.

No enamel

Alexei

I have put it under a microscope, there is no sign of any enamel being present.

Even the star is brass finished, I was mistaken when I looked with a magnifying glass, it is just darker.

I think it never had enamel, another variation perhaps.

Oh and any idea of the exact date or there abouts of this badge

regards chris

Chris and Alexei,

The badge looks like unfinished product.

I doubt the Soviets with their love for perfection would issue official badge in such poor condition.

Is there a chance the badge was taken out of the mint before the enamel was applied?

This could have beed not finished product. Say the badge did not pass the Quality Control, was put in the discard bin and one of the workers picked it up from te junk.

Or may be it was stolen from the mint before the enamel was alppied.

These just my wild guesses, but you never know...

Frustration and gain of this hobby

New World

Some fair points .......but.......

It is a finished product, although it may not seem it from the scan, in the hand you can see the bronze finish that would have looked quite close to a guild when issued.

It has no damage apart from fair wear and tear (I imagine its 60 years plus in age).

Can't see it being taken from a factory by a worker, they must have been sick to death of looking at badges... now if it had gold content!

I think its something as simple as the first badges were made of base metal with a bronze type guild finish

I have a badge (unfortunately in storage now) dating from the late 1930s that also lacks enamel. It is shaped like a flag and is for one of the voluntary societies. It is brass and never had enamel. I wonder if they stoped adding enamel for a period due to cost or shortages. Remember, these badges were not state issue but organizational issue so whatever the organization head wanted was fine.

Gentlemen,

Here's a very magnified section of a badge that is supposed to have enamel, yet there is no trace of it.

... and here's the badge. It's not very worn, but the enamel is flaking off.

enamel

Alexei

I cannot dispute there may have been enamel on the badge if that is the correct finish but objectively there is none left and nil trace.

Either way to me a nice little badge which I have not seen before.

It does look however due to your scan that it is possible to loose all trace of enamel perhaps

regards chris
