Re: Transnistrian Presidential Security 15yr Anniv

Really nice medal Paul. Since the time frame on the reverse is clearly past the breakup of the Soviet Union, may I ask why they still keep the H&S on it? I know they are more loyal to Russia in that region than some others, but are they yearning for the "good ole days?"
Thank you in advance for teaching me something I didn't know.

Re: Transnistrian Presidential Security 15yr Anniv

Phil,

Pridnestrovie, while removing the hammer and sickle from their official national flag (and yes, you'll still see the Moldavian SSR flag used occasionally by individuals but not officially), they have chosen to keep the emblem on their State Seal, coins and medals out of respect for the past- this according to them. I do know that the two Communist parties in the country are not in control of the government and both do not seem to think much of the President- Ygor Smirnov.

The hammer and sickle, while a long time symbol associated with Communism and Socialism (until they adopted the rose), does not, in and of itself, mean anything other than labour. There are several badges of the Third Reich that depict these two items, albeit in a different configuration, and we all know that National Socialism and Communism are pretty much like oil and water.

Pridnestrovie seems to be reaching for a western style democracy and I doubt seriously that they will settle for anything else. Any activity pursued by either of the Communist parties there will have to be in that context- more or less like what is going on in Russia now.

Re: Transnistrian Presidential Security 15yr Anniv

Thank you for the insight. I can understand it from an historical perspective. One cannot simply deny the past to make it go away (despite Soviet revisionists' attempts). I really don't keep up with the FSU republics and breakaways of the same as much as I should. I only recently had a friend in St. Petersburg explain the complicated situation in Lvov, Ukraine during the Soviet era. I had simply asked him why he thought the KGB station there seemed to make such a big deal out of working in that region. Then I got schooled about the constant skirmishes and animosity towards the communist regime - to put it mildly. And all I knew about Moldova was that the wines from there "had medicinal properties."

I was a resident of Moscow when the whole Chechnaya thing started and the OMON and other "Spetsnaz" groups were rounding up darker skinned southerners (Caucasians) literally by the bus loads and had men stationed at all of the ventilation shaft surface openings for the Metro (and was in a train right behind one that had the last car blown up in a tunnel - and yet the story never made it to the newspapers or any of the five TV channels). The point is, I got quick lessons on several southern regions of the FSU because of the sudden turmoil and I learned just how racism works differently in Russia and other parts of Europe than it does here. (Now keep in mind my mentors were all either ex-military or still worked for the government in some capacity.) They did not distrust or have animosity towards a person's color so much as towards his or her nationality. One of my best friends is a Jewish Ukranian from Sevastopal who was the first to spit before and after mentioning the Chechen people. A devout Stalin-hater, he even once said "Uncle Joe should have finished off the SOBs when he put them on the trains and moved them out of that country." I thought that statement profoundly ironic coming from a Jewish attorney in the Прокуратуре, not to mention a bit disturbing.

My point (though I've digressed way too far from it) is that I learned much of what I know about various former republics from Muscovites and the rest from the people who actually lived in these places when I visited their countries. I didn't get to see more than a few places in the south, but the difference was unmistakable. The Moscow I knew had earned a nasty reputation for being populated with folks who considered themselves superior than most of the rest of the FSU. Though no one I worked with or befriended was in favor of going back to communism, they were - like my neighbors - very distrustful of, if not downright bigoted towards foreigners other than Americans (we were very popular in the early 90s). And by no means should you ever get many Russians started on the Germans...

So , I glean what I can from you guys and my few friends back in Russia.

Sorry Art for taking up so much space and going way off topic.

Phillip
