Medal for Distinction in Guarding the State Border of the RSFSR

This medal was re-instituted March 2, 1992 as an award of Russian Federation. This design only lasted 2 years after which a new one was instituted in 1994.

The only difference between this medal and the Soviet one is the lack of CCCP on the lower part of the reverse.

Here is a mysterious specimen. I am fortunate to have all of the Soviet variations, to include a silver flat eyelid version I recently acquired.

This new acquisition is odd, it has a different back with what looks like a KGB style shield and sword as well as “LMD” mint mark.

Has anyone seen any of these before?

I haven't seen one. Maybe a post-Soviet transition(?) or more likely a fantasy piece.

Paul,

I have to agree with you. Upon receipt of the medal, the weight seems too light and I think it is a fantasy piece. Interesting, but if dubious origin.

Cheers,
Tuka

I'm curious - does it appear to be molded or struck? How is the LMD on the suspension ring applied?
