Re: Ribbon ID Help

If this Officer got an Order "Lenin" for service wouldn't that put him into the army in 1930 or before?

Re: Ribbon ID Help

I thought it was only 25 year's service to get a Lenin at one point?

Re: Ribbon ID Help

Wasn't that prior to 1958? When the long service awards came in.

Re: Ribbon ID Help

Yes, Lenin was for 25 years' service.

Another interesting thing, at least post-war (and probably prior), time spent as an officer cadet was considered for retirement vice the clock starting at zero upon commissioning. So admittedly many officers in the 1930s and 1940s didn't spend an entire four years in college, but nevertheless it counted. Post-war also had interesting time calculations such as a year in a combat zone counted extra (2-3x) for retirement, etc.

Also, I find it very interesting that this man has so many orders, but not a single campaign medal.
I think it might be helpful to note that the Soviet Union did not have "campaign medals" per se. There were medals for the "Defense of" certain cities and areas, and there were medals for the "Capture of" certain cities.

However, it would have been possible for a soldier of the Red Army to see a very substantial amount of combat without having been involved in any of the specific "Defense" or "Capture" operations that resulted in the award of those medals.

Thank you all for the very informative replies. I can honesty say that I have learned a ton in the past couple of pages. Thank you all again!

I want to share this great ribbon bar with the Victory over Japan, Victory over Germany and Liberation of the Caucuses Medals.

Actually the bar is upside down; the correct order is
Defense of Caucasus, Victory over Germany, Victory over Japan.

Great bar! :thumbsup

Order of Precedence Question

A stupid question (that may have been addressed somewhere, but I sure can't find it):

What was the order of precedence among the "historic person" orders? I am specifically asking about the Suvorov, Ushakov, Kutuzov, Nakhiomov, and Bogdan K. orders. OK, I know that the order of the orders (sorry) was as I have listed it. But what about classes: Did a Suvorov 3 rank above or below a Kutuzov 1?

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.

The order was Suvorov - Ushakov - Kutuzov - Nakhimov - Khmelnitsky. First came all 1st Class orders, then all 2nd Class orders, and then all 3rd Class orders. So a 2nd Class Suvorov came after a 1st Class Khmelnitsky.
