HSU Colonel-General Proshliakov
Can someone who has the HSU Books look up this Colonel-General of Engineering (later a Marshal of Engineering), Proshliakov (Proshlyakov)...I think he was made a HSU in 1945, but am not sure. I am looking for the date he was made a HSU and why (though I think it might be a generalized reason, though it might be for leading the crossing of the Dnieper?)
Thanks! DougD |

Re: HSU Colonel-General Proshliakov
The title was awarded on 29 May 1945 "for succesfull decision-making in the missions of the front's engineer troops in the Vistula-Oder and Berlin operations". My Russian to Dutch to English translation might be a little rusty though.
Sorry for the dark pic, taken with artificial lighting. |

HSU V.G. Grachev
A long shot, but I am looking for any information (other than what is in the HSU book) or any photos of Viktor G. GRACHEV, HSU August 18, 1945.
He served in (and later commanded) the 2nd Special Aviation Division (also looking for info. on this unit!) and was the pilot who flew Stalin to the Tehran conference. He was made a HSU for operations in support of the partisans. If anyone has anything, let me know, thanks. DougD |

Air and Space Magazine
Here is a bit from Air and Space Magazine, though they get his first initial wrong:
"Stalin himself was afraid to fly. In fact, he preferred not to travel at all, and when he did, it was aboard a carefully inspected limousine or special train. The Teheran conference in 1943 posed a problem for his train because Iran’s track gauge was different. Two Lend-Lease C-47s were flown from Baku to Moscow for the impending flight, one piloted by Air Marshal Golovanov, the other by Lieutenant Colonel M. Grachev. After greeting the pilots, Stalin said, “So, who will fly me to Teheran? Perhaps it would be better for me to fly with Colonel Grachev. Air marshals do more work behind desks than in the cockpit.” Stalin shook Grachev’s hand after the flight, and a promotion quickly followed." |

Saying... In our line stood neunyvayuschy cheerful guy, a mechanic from Moscow, Viktor Grachev. Like all of us, it at the end of the school was awarded the title junior pilot, and he attached button manufacture or trade in two boxes. The war he met in the post regiment commander and the commander finished connection. He headed a lot of responsibility of government flights from the Soviet Union to other countries on other continents and with honor cope with these tasks. Golden Star of the Hero, combat orders, in pursuit of general kitele - it says a lot in the summer biography of Victor G. Grachev. There's a little more here... Soviet Fighter Aces of 1936 - 1953 years And just a little more.... Re: HSU #5609 winner bio info
Jeff,
Are you certain that his name is 'A'fimov, not 'E'fimov? I could not find anything regarding HSU Afimov KA, but I found HSU colonel Efimov KA: "Полковник Ефимов Константин Александрович, родился 18.04.1906 в с. Marc |
