Order "For Bravery".

This Order was instituted On 15th June 1948 by a decree of the Presidium of the Great Assembly.

It was awarded to military servicemen and citizens for their bravery and achievements, who helped for the successful actions on the battlefield in wartime. In peacetime was given for feats in guarding and security of the country. The order also was given to foreign military servicemen and citizens for their cooperation in battles.

It has a Relief of a five pointed star 46 mm in diameter, situated on two swords surrounded by laurel wreath. In the ribbon of the star there is a lion. Under the lion is the sign: "For Bravery".

Classes:
The Five pointed star on the 1st class is enamelled in red and the other elements are gold coloured. The 2nd class has silver swords and wreath and the 3rd class is 40 mm in size and without enamel.
The order is made of yellow metal.
All three classes are suspended on a pentagonal suspension with a red ribbon.

Emissions: The old emission from 1880 had 4 classes with 3 categories for officers and 4 classes for soldiers. The new version has 3 classes without a different Order for soldiers and enlisted men.
The awarding 0f this Order ceased in 1989.

Here is the Bulgarian "Bravery Order", 1st class.

Hi mark,

I've seen a "Bravery Order", 3rd class on offer for $40 but I am sure Dietrich can say more on that subject.

How many were awarded?

Now that is a question that would interest me also!
I've been looking for award numbers for a while now on the web and there doesn't seem to be any source of information on this Thema.
I was hoping very much that our Bulgarian friends could help with this. ;)
So if anyone has any info regarding award numbers help would be much appriciated.

Eddie

Eddie
Petko Pavlov provides a pricelist with his beautiful large book "Bulgarian Orders and Medals" (published in 2002) containing the following values for the PRB Bravery Order:
1st class: $70, 2nd class: $70, 3rd class: $40. Recently, I have seen market prices of $90 for the 1st class and $80 for the 2nd class, higher than the catalog prices probably due to the devaluation of the dollar.

In a time of peace, not too many Bravery Orders can have been awarded. However, when the Communist regime ended, most stored orders and medals came on the market. Documented PRB Bravery Orders are hard to find.

I believe this also explains why quantities are not published for PRB orders. The number of orders awarded and the number of orders in circulation are not the same thing but hard to separate. Somebody has to get the manufactured quantities from the mint.

It is interesting, that quantities for the awards that contain noble metals are known and published. These awards were apparently valuable to the authorities and carefully guarded when the old system collapsed.

Miniatures of PRB orders exist only for the highest orders. They were issued with the full-size order for daily wear. The Bravery Order 1st Class was apparently important enough for a miniature.

Re: Bulgarian Bravery Order

I believe there were 500 numbered Order Of Bravery 3rd Class made most of which never left the warehouse. I picked up #328 with Case for $40 I think sometime in the last 10 months. There are a considerable number of Bulgarian awards out there which were in the warehouse until sold off fairly recently so there was a large wave of them onto the market. I often buy original cased awards that have not seen the light of day since production by the dozen and sometimes for as little as $5 a piece delivered. Some of the awards were produced and never even mounted on a ribbon so frequently finding a ribbon can be far more difficult than the medal and the document? In dreams! Ah the complexities of collecting!

The Order "For Bravery" was founded in 3 classes on 15th June 1948. The award was produced in numbers but situations did not arise for this Order to be awarded therefore the 3rd Class was awarded only 50 times and the 1st Class was only awarded around 10 times but the 2nd Class was never awarded. Most (if not all) awards on the market are from unawarded stock.

The first type of the awards are numbered and the second type unnumbered.

Here is a Type 1 3rd Class #328 and the case for the 3rd Class Order.
