I've been offered the following medal as a 'Latvian State Prize' medal. Has anyone seen one of these before?

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

Hello,

This one looks like it is honored something in Latvian. Does anyone have any ideas. This one is also not serial numbered. The ones from Tadjik SSR listed and the one I have from Estonian SSR are serial numbered. Should these honored XXXX of a republic be serial numbered?

Thanks,
Keith

Genuine

Keith I believe it is genuine.

I don't know enough latvian to translate but having lived near Riga for a year it is definitely Latvian Language.

Who the hell would want to fake this.

My opinion.

Cheers ...

Chris...

Honorary Diploma Of The Supreme Soviet Of The Latvian SSR.

Does anybody have a document for one of these they could share?

Also looking for a list of recipients of this medal or a lead to where I can find one (if it exists).

Thanks,

Alex

Re: Doc for Latvian Supreme Soviet medal

The only picture I could find was this tiny photo from the Latvian state archive. These badges have been discussed fairly extensively in other threads and are very common. The document that goes with these is the Supreme Soviet Presidium Gramota for the respective republic. When you were awarded this gramota, you got the badge to go along with it. There is no easy to use list of recipients, but there is a list. The register of the Supreme Soviet from Latvia will have a list of every recipient, as this was only awarded by the Supreme Soviet after voting on whether the gramota should be awarded, similar to passing a new law or regulation.

Re: Doc for Latvian Supreme Soviet medal

Keith, thank you for the photos. This medal, from this "republic" is so common now (thanks to counterfeiters) that there is practically no value to making them anymore, but someone is still pumping them out. Since I have several of them and have yet to see an official serial number of any kind on one, I doubt there is a way to track one medal to one person.

At the same time, they are one of the better-looking medals of their kind. You can get them on ePay for $10 for 10 medals - always suspect.

Thanks, Keith and Phillip, for your replies. Very informative! :thumbsup

Keith, since you found that image on the Latvian State Archives site, do you know how to use or navigate their online system? Do you know if I would be able to access the register documents online? I tried some searches through the archive website, but had no luck. I think the issue was less language (google translator!) than my total ignorance of the system and its organization.

I found a larger, clearer scan of the medal document on a Russian forum, so I've posted that.

I recently acquired one of these medals as part of a group I purchased from a fellow forum member. (I thought a document was included too, but perhaps we had a misunderstanding. Working on sorting that out.) It's mounted on a homemade bar with three other badges. I'll put images in following posts (the rest of the group will go on the researched awards forum once I get the archival documents).

The homemade bar.

A close-up of the medal.

I think it's authentic but would greatly appreciate second opinions.

Re: Doc for Latvian Supreme Soviet medal

Not only is that a handy job for a personal "medal" bar, but the owner even had to punch a new hole through the 30th anniversary vet medal. Pretty cool and very innovative.

Phillip

About the originality or the medal - I'd say it is real. There is no good reason for someone to attach a fake one of these when they are so plentiful.:)

Re: Doc for Latvian Supreme Soviet medal

Alex,

I see these for sale on a regular basis on some of the Russian sites. None were for sale now, but I found quite a bit about this by googling "Latvijas PSR Augstākās Padomes Prezidija Goda Raksts". You find resumes for people that have received this and newspaper articles about the award. Also using the pictures option in google search will give you some information.

I have seen these badges being sold in the baltics by the dozens, I believe that a large unissued batch of these made it to the marketplace.

As far as the Latvian state archive or state library is concerned - they would have information regarding all of the recipients, but you would have to go there. It would be interesting, but very time consuming.
