I think its for holding some kind of paper document because of its unusual back?

What you have is a 1947 Badge for 30th Anniversary of the Armed Forces. Rumor has it that it was given to participants of the Victory Parade in Moscow. For some reason the original screwback attachement was replaced with these two prongs on this piece.

I have always wondered quite what this badge is.

I have posted it before and the answer was;

It is believed to be awarded to guys who were at the Victory parade in 45.

Checking out a Russian site which has some fantastic badges its states that this is a badge awarded to NKVD members who had been in the military for 30 years in 1948.

The badge is worn on the sleeve at the wrist which may explain the unusual connection device on its reverse.

I have serious problems believing that this is an NKVD badge. There has NEVER been an NKVD or other Soviet state security issued badge commemorating anything other than the VChK-NKVD-KGB line. They were always totally seperate from the military and in general looked down on them. It just makes absolutely no sense. Also, an anniversary badge without the date or years on it?

I don't doubt that a website said so. I would like to see the site. If this is a vendor I would have serious doubts. While most vendors are honest many others are prone to exageration or even fraud. I have seen websites advertising everything from common 1980s era wreathed star hat badges to Orders of the Red Star as NKVD or KGB stuff.

My russian absolutely sucks but doesn't the text on that thing say something like "honour to the soviet army"?
And it would not be logical for an NKVD badge to have that text.

This site was a Russian collectors site and he has some awesome genuine very hard to find badges. Nothing was for sale.

Description: Rare KGB Military Forces badge. I have been told that this badge came from a presentation portfolio for the members of the Congress of KGB. Made of silvered bronze and enamels. Two piece construction. In excellent condition. No cracks or hairlines. Marked on backside MMD (Moscow Mint). Size 40x25 mm.

The asking price is $25 so I can't imagine this being rare!?!
