Podvignaroda question

While searching Podvignaroda (with much success ...generally...), I ran into a technical problem with one record relating to a group in my collection. None of the documents would load; it seems the files were not linked properly. Any suggestions about what to do about this?

The record is:

фонд 33
опись 690155
единица хранения 311
номер записи в базе данных: 30770706

Thanks,

Alex

Re: Podvignaroda question

Contact the ministry (site admin.). They'll get round to fixing it when they can no doubt.

I LOVE that site and the price suits my pocket too!

At first I laughed, thinking, as one often does when contacting a government agency, that my request would never see the light of day. But I just rechecked the record, and all the documents were there, everything functional, fixed in less than 24 hours. That is nothing short of outstanding! I am infinitely impressed. Podvignaroda has won my utmost respect.

That is impressive. Now we all know what to do when we find a bad link!

Alex,

Did you contact them about the missing scans, or did they figure it themselves?

I did contact them. In Russian, to the best of my beginner ability.

When will it stop?

As of November 25, 2011, Podvignaroda website has 12,154,280 awarding records in its database. All of them are GPW awarding. I am wondering how much more will be added before they have completed to scan and put online all available documents.

I don't have any of Paul's book beside me at the moment, but I was reading The Soviet General Staff at War from General of Army Sergei M. Shtemenko and he provides some interesting statistics about awarding.

Number of awards issued per year during the war (all of them were serial numbered during the war)
1941 - 32,700
1942 - 395,000
1943 - 2,050,000
1944 - 4,300,000
1945 - 5,470,000
---------
Total : 12,247,700 awards

Later he provides other info about how many orders and how many Bravery and CSM were awarded:
5,300,000 Orders awarded for GPW feats as of 1948
Valour Medal 4,230,000
Combat Service 3,320,000
--------------
Total: 12,850,000 + Nakhimov and Ushakov medals

So, according to these numbers, Podvignaroda is very close to the total. And there must be some that will be missing for ever as well.

But the problem is that I still have probably 1/4 of my GPW-era awards that still can't be found yet on the website.

Maybe some mistakes exist in the database which make them not found when searching by awardee names or maybe there was more than 12-13 millions serial numbered awards issues during GPW.

Anybody else still have many awards that not generating hits on podvignaroda?

3/4 of my searches result in a dead end.

Re: When will it stop?

If I got 20% hits I'd be lucky... But for the price you can't go wrong.... I'm still eagerly awaiting some additions which will hopefully come according to the plan.

As for language skills when we are born we have none so they are certainly something that can be learnt and very frequently for nothing. All the Cyrillic/Russian/Bulgarian that I know I've learnt by study and practice. I've never had a "lesson" other than corrections put to me on this forum. I taught myself how to read and translate Korean over a 3 day period in late 2010 and that has helped me no end although I still have a long way to go and there have been some frustrating times!

If someone is unwilling or unable to learn new languages it always helps to have multilingual friends who can do you favours for free!

Will the "Catch up" awards get themselves posted on the site too?

Interesting question. Well, 75% found is not a bad result. I think I have the same percentage. It seems they did all the Presidium awards first (HSU, Suvorov 1st, Kutuzov 1st, etc.) and have been working in a roughly chronological order since, as I have found close to a 100% of my 1942 awards. For 1943 and early 1944 it is about 75% and for late 1944 and 1945 about 30%. That last batch they put online (4.2 million awards on November 25) seemed to have consisted of a lot of 1944 and 1945 awards, since I have found a lot of late-war awards to 'my' awardees that I couldn't find before. If they are indeed working chronologically, Many 1944 and 1945 awards are still to come, and I think that most collectors primarily have late-war awards.

By the way, I have also noticed that Podvig Naroda often has spelling errors, which is of course inevitable since they just copy the information from the award sheets, which often contain errors. Especially those funky Georgian names are a nightmare. So fill out as few fields as possible and try all combinations - last name and first name, patronymic and year of birth, etc. It really helps.
