Hungarian Security
I thought I'd start a thread dealing with Hungarian security forces- Police, Security Forces and Border Guard. If anyone has any items that fit, please post them!
Here's a Police service cap badge. Note the weapons below the star; if they were not there, this badge would be for the AVH and/or Border Guard.

Re: Hungarian Security
A volunteer police (onkentes rendor) badge, hot enamel variant, and a 5 year service pin.

Re: Hungarian Security
This next badge, the Korzeti Megbizott, literally indicates jurisdiction over a district, but in reality the jurisdiction is over, say, five streets in a city environment or a few small villages in a rural area.

Re: Hungarian Security
This next badge is for a graduate of the Tiszti Police (Rendor) Academy. Sorry about the lighting, but the harsh light allows the banner to be read. As you can see from the shield, this is from the Kadar period. You can also see a downfall of these badges... they lose enamel fairly easily when dropped from any height.

Re: Hungarian Security
A couple more items and I'm going to call it a night. Here are two police academy/school badges that break with the "diamond" shape. Both have opposing tab backs. The gold coloured badge is designated "BM Kun Bela Zaszlos-Kepzo Iscola" (the Interior Ministry school for NCO's and Warrant Officers), and the silver coloured badge is designated "BM Tiszthelvetieskepzo Iscola" (the Interior Ministry school for NCO's).

Re: Hungarian Security
Outstanding set. The Hungarians really did an excellent job with badges.:thumbsup Of course having never seen most of these I am still in the awed phase. However, I do have a border guard badge like the one you posted, but since the only thing on the screw nut is "PV" I am assuming it is Hungarian made (since those are also the initials of the words for "border guard" - at least in Russian).
Thank you Greg for the post of the diamond police academy badge. I have one of those as well and did not know that it was for the police academy. Do you mind posting a picture of the reverse? These seem to have a strange attaching mechanism and a very short, pointed screw post. Also, mine has a blue field in th background of the "rays" spanning down from the star. I'll post a picture tomorrow. The last thing I want to mention tonight is the volunteer policing badges - I really need to find someone who has some for sale. I will eventually start a thread of "Druzhinnik" badges because I've been collecting them (and documents) for some years now and I've found a few interesting ones - but nothing from Hungary.:) Phillip

Re: Hungarian Security
Phil,
Based on your description, your Hungarian academy badge sounds like the military badge for those graduating from a civilian university rather than a military academy... something like an officer graduating from LSU (ROTC) rather than West Point. The badge would be light blue with a "wolf's tooth" trim in the national colours (red, white and green) and with the Kadar arms in the center. These are not security badges but, rather, military badges.

Re: Hungarian Security
Phil,
In answer to your "attaching mechanism" question... there were, basically, 5 ways a Hungarian badge could employ. The first is the straight needle- "stick pin". The second is, of course, the standard pin and catch. The third, which is rare, is the Soviet-style bolt and nut/wheel. The fourth, which is seen on military and security badges most frequently, is the opposing prongs or tabs. Basically, you have two prongs or tabs, going in opposing directions, being threaded into a "sleeve" added to the uniform for this purpose. Many sellers who are unfamiliar with this process will identify these badges as cap or hat badges because of the prong similarity. Below, you see three basic types. On the left are opposing prongs- in use from the '40's through '89. In the center, "opposing tabs" that are riveted into a channel on the badge back. On the right, "opposing tabs" that are on a piece that is bolted to the back.

Re: Hungarian Security
That is something good to know about the symbol within the overall symbol.:thumbsup
Okay, I finally took some quick photos of the badge in question. It is - from what I can see - identical to yours with only the central background color difference. I also took a picture of the reverse because I see it is like the third badge in your set of attaching mechanisms (I need to keep using that phrase - it's growing on me:)). My little old badge didn't have the actual bizarro wing nut device to clamp it down with - the seller warned me before he sold it to me. I posted two pictures because you can see the tiny "ridges" all inside the blue border better in the second photo. I couldn't see them in the photo you posted. Is that what you meant by "wolf's tooth"? I would still be pleased as one man can be legally to find one of those Hungarian volunteer police badges/pins.:D Phillip

Re: Hungarian Security
Actually Phil, our badges are identical. The harsh lighting on my image makes the blue appear lighter. And yes, your badge would have had an "attaching mechanism" like the one on the right.
The "wolf's tooth" pattern is an altogether different thing, which I'll show later. Hmmmmm, just how pleased would an Onkentes Rendor badge make you, Phil? PM me for more details...
