Re: Russia

The things they drink that taste "good"...wow. Homemade wine = God only knows what went into it. Vodka is the only safe bet and make sure you know when you're done. [/QUOTE]

Just one more small comment on alco...
I don't know for russian home-made wine, but here, in Poland if anybody has it, it's ussually less toxic than what You can get in the shops (no sulphates in it). I would rather be afraid of home-made vodka - anything like "samogon", "bimber" etc. - it has more to do with rat poison than with real vodka, however if someone offers You home-made "fruit-vodka" (not sure what the Russians call it, polish term is "nalewka" - simply fruits with pure spirit) it's worth trying - tasty, yet strong (at average 60%). I have to agree that vodka found in shops is something safe. If You go to Ukraine - the safest alcohols are those found in... drugstores. They sell "medicine" that have from 35 to 50% of alcohol in that look just like normal "herb vodka" - "Berioz", "Svatogor", "Vigor" etc. are the names. Worth trying.

Btw. Wow. Congratulations on being called "alcoholic" by russians. That IS an achievement.

haha...not sure if that is an acheivment or just made me stop and think that perhaps i should tone it down from now on.

the homemade wine, honestly, i think was watered down coignac mixed with grapes. it tasted nasty. anything bought in a store is pretty safe. well...anything with a legitimate looking label is safe if it's in a store.

i can't think of anything, but if i do i will post it. also, check out a list of common phrases if you aren't a fluent speaker. (not sure, if it was said or not)

Re: Russia

May I suggest you to take a look at this website. English Russia
You can see what you may deal with, plus there are a lot of funny pictures that are worth a look. It shows some very nice places and museums that you could visit.

But be careful if you ride Moscow subway.

Moscow Taganskii Nuclear Bunker... or Up and down in Moscow : from -65m to 59th floor...

Last week-end, when in Moscow, I went from -65 meters deep to 59th floor high...

I had the opportunity to visit the Taganskii Bunker (-65 meters) and relax in the new restaurant on top of the 59th floor at "Moscow City".

The Taganskii Bunker, only recently opened to the public, is the former Nuclear Soviet secret Command Post, established in 1956 by Kruschev. It is here that the Soviet leaders established their command post, in case of nuclear confrontation (war...) with the West. This bunker is 65 meters (200 feet) deep under the ground level. It is formed of 4 blocks connected between themselves, and with the Metro. It has been in use until 1991... It is only a few years ago that some work has been done there, and now it is possible to visit it...

My pics are not so good, but you will get the feeling being there. Enjoy the visit!!!

A very discreet entrance that nothing shows as a secret bunker place. The Red Star has obviously been added recently for "commercial" purpose...

The gate. Ready for the visit ?

Scheme of the network of bunkers.

(It is difficult to post pics because of the limitation in size... )

Plan.

So, let's go!!!

Ch.

Stuff seen today... Part 1

Greetings to All,

I went to a 'private' militaria flea market south of Mainz, Germany today. One vendor had the following items for sale. Mind you that back the good old days, there would have been 5 or s6 vendors selling items like this at the Frankfurt flea market.

This vendor also have some high end items for auction at the end of this month through the medalhouse .... in Stuttgart, Germany.

Please pardon the quality of the photos....since this was a 'private' market, the Germans sellers weren't too keen of any photos taken in the hall.
