Mark--no big deal. Happens to the best of us. Nice dagger though. I have no idea what it's worth, but it looks cool to me.

The dagger is a DDR army generals dress dagger. Might be original, or a parts dagger. -DD

I am not sure. I know there are ways, and higher end DDR collectors know the tricks. I was told that alot of both officer and general / admiral daggers were assembled from already made parts in 1990 and later. This was very true of unit sabres.

Doug,

Pardon me, but I am somewhat unclear on the concept here: if all parts are genuine how can the dagger not be genuine  ? To me, there is simply no way to prove when it was assembled, especially since we all know that the human factor will always play a part in each of our endeavours.

Daggers

This issue first came up at the end of WWII, whe GIs started to go into German factories and put together daggers. They were not issued, and were almost impossible to tell from ones that had been original. As for DDR daggers they were issued with certificates too, that needed to match the serial numbers on the dagger and box in order to be issued; those that are loose, without paper and box run the risk of being put togethers. Most of the DDR sabres were put togethers like this.

If simply haveing an item thats the right make up of parts, the right colors, then these are fine; but they do not have the historical backgound that issued ones do, i.e. they were never worn by a DDR General. To me (and i would say most colelctors) a put together item is less valuable.

The original photo shows no paper, no award box, no name, no history; just a photo. Thus my comment it MIGHT be a put together dagger.

'Genuine' is a very relative term in militaria.
