Red Army Commander Badge - Real?
All:
Here's one that I recently came across. It's a nice badge, the photos don't do it justice. The enamel is pretty ugly though... :yow I've got my opinion on it, which has been backed up by another knowledgable opinion (thanks!) but I'd like to hear from anyone else that has thoughts on it. Dave |

Seems the enamel was either melted or very crudly replaced. I can't find this badge in any of my references.

Can´t say any profound to the badge.
But as I know there are a lot of variations of these red army commander badges. The army could not provide all the commanders with badges, so many commanders ordered personally a badge in workshops. They asked to add the jeweller any element, like artillery guns etc.... There were no rules. The badge were made either in bronze or in silver. Here are pictures of other ones. They locked as they have a better producing quality. |

Guys,
This was my reply about the first badge in this thread: For the most part these badges were privately ordered and manufactured, so a tremendous amount of variations exist. What makes matters even worth is that they never made a precise official description of the badge. I can't tell for sure one way or the other, but here's what I find unusual - they often used the laurel wreaths from Imperial academy badges and this doesn't look like one; I have never seen one with enameled ribbon at the bottom, besides I don't like the fact that enamel on the star is black and apparently replaced (or looks like it was replaced long time ago), yet the red enamel on the ribbon is perfect; never seen one with silver plated star and emblem (they are always brass or copper); screwpost is too thick for such an early piece (again they mostly used screws from Imperial badges); nut looks modern; the horizontal bar on the pieces I have seen was attached to the back of the wreath; heavy patina on the wreath and almost no patina on the back of the star?; etc. As for the other badges in this thread I am skeptical, because they never come in such pristine condition, but it's impossible to tell for sure from a scan - they need to be examined in person and under some serious magnification to make sure that they are indeed old.
