The depth of emotion and feelings about The Great Patriotic War has seared itself into the Russian soul. When I was in Moscow a couple of weeks ago, I had business which took us to an office tucked into a niche in the entrance to some obscure intstitute on Leninskiy Prospekt. When we entered, there were several vendors and others set iup in the vestibule. To one side, there was an enormous slab of polished white marble forming part of one wall, inscribed with the names and ranks of the dead, who had been students at that institute. There was etched also a large Order of the Red Star, along with the motto, "Let no-one forget, Let nothing be forgotten". Here, in this dark and dusty entrance to a forgotten building, a monument to the fallen, with fresh red roses laid before it. I found myself crying for those whose youth, and dreams, and life had been snatched away so abruptly. Yet... I felt something else.....I felt PROUD!

I can understand you kabanchik. In WWI we fought against Russia too, but this was a more "classic" war and killing soldiers is something completely different as killing innocent people like in WWII. I can feel with the Russians and I am glad that the Germans and Russians today are getting closer without hate for something which happened in the past. We have to do anything that something like WWII never happens again.

On Sunday I met with another collector of Soviet medals I know from ebay. He lives only 25 km away. We talked for hours about medals and history. He is from Russia (Siberia) and was very friendly. Btw. he knows one of the admins of mondvor.narod.ru who moved from Kiev to the US. I really enjoyed talking to him.

1945 Victory Parade

For those interested in the 1945 Victory Parade in Moscow, the following DVD includes 2'30 of images of this Parade... in colors.

Maybe you are already aware of it, and have already seen them, but if not...

The name of the DVD is "Der Kalte Krieg in Farbe" (The Cold War in colors)(in german only).

Gentlemen,

There is an interesting Victory Day article on this website. Henry Sakaida visited Kiev several times and was kind enough to provide a "travelers' journal".

Victory Day in Kiev

I have the 1945, 1986, and the 50 year anniversary parade on video. I would say that the 1945 parade is the best, when the horses are used to review the soldiers. Something seems lost when they drive around in a massive open top convertible automobile

Art,

How can we find the 1945, 1986, and the 50 year anniversary parades on video ?
Are they for sale - and where - , or did you record them from a TV program ?
The 1945 one : is it in B&W, or in colors ?

Any info ?

Thanks.

Ch.

Christophe,

I bought mine a few years ago on EBay...they are 3 separate videos..the guy who sold me mine has some listed there now at USD $9.95 each (well worth it!) search for VICTORY PARADE VIDEO and you will see them. Sorry, no color..although I have seen color footage of the Nazi banner tossing ceremony which is included on the video.

Day of Victory 2004

Is anyone interested in planning a trip to Moscow for Victory Day 2004?

That would be cool but a bit expensive...

If there's enough interest from people I would give it some serious thought!!!
