Soviet Marshal Sergei Sokolov Passes At Age 101

Today is a sad day, the oldest living Soviet Marshal, Sergei Sokolov passed away yesterday at age 101.

Sokolov wasn't a General rank during the Great Patriotic War it wasn't until 1953 that he became a General.

As for high profile Second World War Participants that made it to General rank, we still have Giap and Prince Phillip.

August was a grim month for Soviet marshals. The last living Marshal of Armored Troops Losik passed away on the 20th, Air Force Marshal Efimov on the 31st.

What's notable is that Sokolov passed away three days after his wife did. She was born in 1920, they were married for 68 years together. They truly must have been soulmates. Sokolov was laid to rest today next to his wife in Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery. I saw some of the funeral. He was buried with full military honors, with an honor guard escort and Officers carrying Sokolov's medals on pillows.
