I don't know where you are getting Pyotr (Пётр) from as both documents read "Петр" (Petr). This ё/e situation is a very problematic thing in modern Russia.

Unless I am mistaken, Russian for "Peter" is indeed Pyotr, however from what I have noticed many russian-speakers don't differntiante between "yo" and "ye" in writing.

It is definitely "Pyotr". Native Russian speakers usually do not indicate accents when writing, especially in print type.

Re: Red Star,0062640,Kalinin Front

In writing Russians often ignore the diaeresis (some purists don't consider the 'ё' a separate letter, but just a variation of the 'е'), but they definitely pronounce the letter like 'yo'. In western transliterations (primarily English) we often ignore the diaeresis for some reason (Gorbachev seems to more common than the more correct Gorbachov); mainly, I guess, because these translator are unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the Russian language.

Re: Red Star,0062640,Kalinin Front

But isn't that the problem of the english transcription as such? To me "Kh" doesn't sound like "X" at all. Even "H" would be better... And all those "Zh"...
For example, in Poland (with the transcription still miles away from being perfect) have no doubt that Nikita Sergeevich's surname was Chruszczow instead of Khruschev. But we're getting off-topic here...

The problem is that the English language doesn't have that 'Х' sound (Polish, German, Dutch, and all Slavic languages do). 'Kh' is just a letter combination somebody came up with to transliterate that Russian letter. I'd say that 'H' is just as poor a solution.

OK, let's get back to the topic... :thumbsup
