KGB 70th Anniversary Medal

Gentlemen,

I don't believe it's a fantasy piece, and it's not a local (republican) KGB badge. Reverse is plain, has Moscow mint mark on the suspension. I have seen another one before, but have no idea what it is. Would appreciate any help.

Alexei,

Why don't you think it is fantasy?

It doesn't look official to me. With no republic or other info and the date of 1917 it implies that it is for the whole KGB. Yet we know there is a nice 70th KGB badge issued. Also I have never seen another square-ribbon KGB award.

It does look like a veteran badge. My guess would be fantasy/veteran badge made by one of the veteran's associations.

But maybe it is genuine but nit specific to the OKP - Kremlin Guards.

Shawn,

It's a lousy scan and doesn't show the detail, but I believe this can only be a mint production - all details are crisp clear even under 30x magnification, red enamel is hot backed on, and in addition the medallion is also covered with cold see through enamel, like a layer of lacquer. Also there is a crisp clear Moscow mint mark on the back of the suspension.

This is the best I can do with my scanner, but it shows the mint mark and who detailed the medal is. Scanned at 2400dpi.

The suspension could belong to another medal/badge.

Tal,

You are right, it's possible, but I don't believe it. If it were a fantasy piece they would need a lot of those genuine suspensions to make the medal profitable.

Shawn,

I just had an idea - what do you say if I send it to you to have a look at. You are the ultimate authority on KGB badges.
