Paul McDaniel Donates Images to Website
Guys,
Just wanted to post that Paul McDaniel ( the guru who literally wrote the book on Soviet awards ) has generously donated the use of all the photographs he took while publishing his book on Soviet awards to this website. Paul and I spoke via email last year briefly before he left for overseas service and he promised that when his life settled down a little and he returned stateside he would mail me all the photos used in the publication of his book. Well, time kind of came and went, I figured Paul was really busy and didn't think his life would ever return to the point where he could get these photos to me. A year later, I decided that I would have the image contest and afterwards, Paul might find it easier to simply "fill in the gaps". Paul emailed me about a week ago and apologized for the length of time it's been in getting these photos to me. I understood completely. I was expecting a manilla envelope with a bunch of snapshots..what I received was a box that weighed about 25 lbs, jam packed with photos from his book and others. I've never seen as many photographs before in my life. He gave me permission to use whatever I want for the website, and return them whenever I get through them all. So, look for the tougher specimens ( I saw a beautiful T1V1 Nevsky, and an equally impressive Khmelnitsky 1c, V1 ) to be posted on the website in the near future. In looking through some of the photos last nite, I noticed he has quite a few photos of specimens which didn't appear in the book. I'll try to use these on the site. Thanks Paul! Art

Sweet!
Is it possible for a member to scan them and be available to donating members to see and compare to questionable items!? I would even go out and buy a quality scanner to help the cause! Just a thought... Rusty.

Rusty,
Let me work through the website first, and we'll see what happens. Paul still retains full ownership of the photos. He has granted me permission to use the images on the website only so I won't do anything with them unless he expressly gives me permission to do so. It's going to take me months to look through all the photos. I would estimate there must be at least 10,000 photos. It's going to be a fantastic winter project Art

Art,
did Paul specify what's the source of these photos? Do they include photos of items sent to Paul by collectors for authentication/certification? William |

William,
They are all from the publication of his book. He explained that images accumulated via his authentication service are confidential. Art

Art,
If I may venture a suggestion. Could you scan these photos in high resolution. The ones currently on this site are "useful illustrations", but are not very useful when it comes to the finer details. It is always possible to shrink an image; the reverse is simply not true. Marc |

Another sugestion:
Art, A specified section of the forum could host pictures, and you might call it "The McDanieal Collection". You could post there high resolution pictures of whatever you think will be good to see, and YOU could post pictures without the 50K limit. An important note - in this section, NO comments to the pictures will be allowed, so any discussion will be made in the proper sections, with links to the MDC section. My 2 Rubles...... Tal
