if you stick Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky in wikipedia you can read up more on the photographer. I first heard about and saw these pictures a few years ago and it was really amazing. I have never imaged an imperial Russia in colour. The rough and scratchy films that come out of the pre-revolution state make it almost impossible to believe they also created these fantastic images which really bring the subject matter to life.
