Gentlemen,

Here's the cover:

... and the inside:

On the left side of the cover there is a poem about the Medal, written by Boris Likharev.

We all know that this and other "defense of" medals were stamped at regimental level. What I would like to find up, is which military unit is responsible for stumping S/N on the medals, and is there a way to find the documents of such units.

Unusual place for the S/N:

The question - is it official? Does other medals got hard cover in the same style?

Tal,

I have seen several of them, and only for this medal. I don't know for sure if they are official, but I believe they are not, because every one of them mentions that this is a special order by a military unit. Here's a scan:

They were not always stamped at regimental level, but also by shops that were custom making larger suspension bars to make sure the owner gets back his medals, and not somebody else's. The number in most cases matches that of the award document.

Here is one of the Leningrad Medals. It is engraved, "Yegorova, M. I."

I tweaked the scan a little to give some contrast to the engraving, so the medal looks funny.

Here is the second Defense of Leningrad Medal. It is engraved, "Derevyachina, Valintina Petrovna, No. E-04834."

Prototypes.

The "X" and line deleting the flag was made by Stalin:

Hello fellow members,
I purchased this document for the medal for defense of Leningrad recently in L'viv.
What is strange is that the document was the one with the date "1943" already printed in whole. But it appears that the medal and document was issued in 1948 and the "3" have been manually changed for a "8".

Does it look fine? I wonder why they simply didn't use a later document with the year "194_" or "19__" and completed it to make 1948.

Thanks for your comments.

Matteti,

Could you please post an enlarged scan of the gerb of the USSR at the top of the document. Personally, I do not like the color of the paper.

Lapa, here is the USSR crest in bigger size. To my eyes, when lookig at the crest, it is the same color than the rest of the text in black in the document. This is what other documents I have seen also show. But I am not an expert.

Maybe the scanner is creating some effect in color?

Here is the scan in color obtained by scanner and with auto-adjust color from my pic software... the paper looks more white here...

If you think something is wrong, please be specific as to what is not legit. Because I bought it from a seller who I trust and I don't see anything wrong according to my level of knowledge. I would like to learn from this if I can.
