IN FRONT YOU CAN SEE THE FACE OF NIKOLAY IVANOVICH PIROGOV - A PROMINENT RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN SCIENTIST, DOCTOR, PEDAGOGUE, PUBLIC FIGURE, AND CORRESPONDING MEMBER OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (1847). HE IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE FOUNDER OF FIELD SURGERY, AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRST SURGEONS IN EUROPE TO USE ETHER AS AN ANAESTHETIC.

Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov (1810–1881)

was a great Russian scientist, surgeon, educator and public figure of 19th century.
After he successfully graduated from the Moscow University, the 18 year old Pirogov undertook professorship studies at Derpt University.
In 1829 the investigation on aorticlegation performed by the young scientist was awarded a gold medal.
In 1836 Pirogov was elected professor of Surgery at the Derpt University where he pioneered a method of preparing frozen cadaver sections for study of surgical and applied anatomy.
In 1841 N.I. Pirogov was appointed Chairman of Surgery at St. Petersburg Medical Military Academy. At that time he wrote a set of works on surgery and anatomy, which consolidated Pirogov’s world-wide fame: “Anatomy of Arterial Trunks and Fasciae”, “Topographic Anatomy”, and ‘Pirogov’s Amputation’ are among them. During the Crimean War the surgeon was working on the problem of using ether for anaesthesia. He was the first in the world to apply ether anaesthesia in a military field hospital. Under his guidance 14 doctor’s theses on the most vital problems of surgery were written and defended. Pirogov’s achievements as an operating surgeon, scientist and teacher have left a profound landmark in surgical history.
