I am not sure if I missed anything here or not, but my understanding was that the papers was found in the ground together with the medal...
Just my opinion, but those pieces of papers don't appear to have been exposed to outdoor weather and soil. They are just dry and aged like as if they stayed indoor. Such paper would never survive more than a few seasons or years at max. Even the medal ribbon is in too good condition to have been in the soil for 60 years. It always depends on the specific condition of the soil and weather, but in general, this would decompose much more quickly. |

matteti: I was surprised like you. Believe me, the paper was round about the screw-bolt. Look at the second photo in my first report here. That photo is taken a few minutes after finding.
The medal was founded in very dry soil at the edge of the woody downhill. It must be the reason, why is the paper so conserved as we can see... |

MinTaur: I didn't notice the second photo in your first posting until now. I just looked at it now and it really seem that the paper was around the screwpost for a long time and dried there in that position.
Sorry for my suspicions. |

I'm still waiting for informations about the recipient of the medal. Unfortunately Prague's Embassy of Russian Federation still didn't reply to my query. So I'm going to write a letter to an archive in Russia.
By the way - Is possible to identify what type and variation is that medal? The clamping plate is without "moustaches". Thanks! |

If I'm not mistaken, T1V3 is the only variant with that type of suspension and a plate on the back rather than stitching.

MinTaur,
Were you able to get any other information about him? How did he die? Also it might be a good idea to contact the Russian embassy - he might still have relatives in Russia, who know nothing about him. Alexei |

I found some interesting informations about a soldier with this name. I believe he's the same person.
Gvardeyskiy Krasnoarmeets Aleksei Andreevich Chudinov born: 1910 Petrushevskay, Archangelsk's area fell in the fight: 4th August 1943 buried in Orel's area, Beldashkino He was awarded from the order of 3rd Guard Parachute Artillery Regiment (3-y Gvardeyskiy Vozdushno-Desantnyy Artillerskiy Polk). But I don't know any informations about this unit. Could somebody help me with that? Thanks! Yesterday I got new informations about Chudinov's medal For Bravery from another archive in Russia! Now I know why he was awarded. The granting command sounds: "...at 13rd March 1943 during the toughest fights he hung up the telephone line on a tree, regardless of german mortar shelling...". :wow Last edited by CtahhR; 09-01-2014 at 03:05 PM. |

Re: Question about a Bravery Medal
Man, what a truely astounding story. Finding something lost for 50 years, and then attaching a name and deed to it.... What a literal treasure.
I wonder if Chudinov's family could be traced? :idea
