Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Stalingrad" Document.

Actually it was issued by the Military Commissar of the Stalin Oblast (which is currently the Donetsk Oblast in Ukraine), Colonel Korotkov. The recipient was probably a decommissioned soldier (so technically a civilian, and that may have been what you meant).

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Stalingrad" Document.

Cheers for the correction I had a bit of difficulty reading the award region going on only the first picture.

Civilian as in not in service at time of awarding. If they were "at home" in Stalin region they may well have been wounded onto the labour front as very frequently occurred.

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Stalingrad".

Defense of Stalingrad Medal document, awarded on June 4th, 1943 to Guards Captain Grigory Iosifovich Moskalenko, Serial #A29708. Can anyone identify the awarding unit or signature? I think it's an artillery unit.

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Stalingrad".

That's all correct.

There is very little information on the 295th Guards out there but this tit-bit is insightful;

Stalingrad Tractor Factory is certainly something that rings bells.....

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Stalingrad".

Thanks, Tom, I see that now on the stamp, and I also notice, last line above signature something to the effect of, "Commander 137th. . ." I think you're right on the signature.

The releveant passage from the above, and I quote, thanks to Google translate, "Sadigov battery was sent to the 295th Guards Artillery Regiment, which at the time was fighting at the walls of the Stalingrad Tractor Factory."

Thank you both, very much, for this interesting information. Any ideas on the date? I think it's March 4th, 1943, handwriting again, sigh. . .

No problems Bill :). Always nice to see a story behind a simple bit of paper!

I think the date's either June or July but i can't be sure!

The 137th Tank brigade fought under Chuikov as part of the 62nd army in Stalingrad, but image not sure if that links to the "commander of the 137" piece.

Army structures escape my small brain.

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Stalingrad".

Army Structures are as follows;

Theatre (European) commanded by Generalissimus Stalin
Front (Stalingrad) commanded by Andrej Erjemenko
Army (62nd) commanded by Vasilij Chuikov
Corps (23rd Tank) commanded by Efim Pushkin
Brigade (137th Tank) commanded by (Unknown formerly Kirill Udovichenko)
Regiment (295th Guards Artillery) commanded by Sokolov
Under Regiment would be Artillery Battery but we don't have that information.

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Stalingrad".

Some good information on those citations. His position was deputy commander of the 137th Guards Artillery Regiment under the 70th Rifle Division post-Stalingrad.
