I was under the impression they could come that way with the leather chin strap being a bit more rare if you will. Now I need to find those pictures I had of generals with this sort of strap. I know I have seen it in use before but I need to find those pics. When I do I will post them or if anyone else has any fotos of this style chin strap please post them. Thanks Clete
Clete,

If this was the entirely olive drab green G.O. "field" service cap I would certainly agree with you. As you know, those used the "flat" leather chin strap that was also dyed olive drab green.

cap

The black flat chin cords were done on generals service caps; i have had in a few examples (as has Clete) and here are numerous photos of them being worn with this style of service cap.

Doug,

Thanks for the clarification. I cannot say I've ever come across such a photo myself.

General

This guy is not big into regulations, but it shows the service hat with the black flat chin strap (i think he is pushing his luck using it as a parade cap!).

No problem; most of my books are in the attic, but I was able to find these shots...The Bagramyan one is a good clear one. I still think, like clete, that it was uncommon for generals to wear the black cap cords rather than the gold.

The first shot shows how regulations are nice, but not the end all, be all, of what actually was done.

more

As I was going through 8 years of photos the past two days ( a few long and dull flights to kill on the laptop) i found a few more.

The first is a nice example for an Armor General, the second an example for the Red Air Force.
