Re: Precedence of DPKR Orders and Medals

I second Lapa. You´ve done a superb job.

BTW, the military supply medal has 3 classes. I presume their order of precedence is one after the other.

I have made this order on the base of my observations (many pictures of not so glamourous breasts:D), I'm less sure for the last line, but the three classes of the military supply seems at the bottom (may be it's more for civilians than military personel??).

I´m not 100% sure neither about the order of precedence, but since their classes stand for service years (they have their respective amount on the bottom), I´d say it´s just like everywhere else.

Re: Precedence of DPKR Orders and Medals

The DPRK order of precedence for wearing has changed. Now the left side of uniform is for "Merit" awards (such as Hero Star, Orders Kim Il-Sung, National Flag, Labour, etc., Medals "For Military Merits", "For Merits", etc.) and the right side is for commemorative awards only (Commemorative Order "Foundation Of The Korean People's Army", Commemorative Medal "Military Parade" etc.). I believe the Commemorative Orders are ranked in creation date with the Commemorative Medals below them also in creation date. A long standing military officer will have both sides covered but the commonly seen in the press, young soldiers usually just have a Commemorative Medal on the right chest. Hopefully this helps you all with recognition of DPRK awards as some of those uniforms are covered on both sides. Also if the left hand side is full the "overflow" of awards are placed under their Commemorative awards, so the Order Of The National Flag 3rd Class can often be found under the Commemorative Orders.

I have never seen a picture of someone wearing a Yi Sun-Shin order. I think that for some obscures reasons (may be Kim is the only historical figure to have right to be on a medal), this order is completely obsolete.

Re: Precedence of DPKR Orders and Medals

I'm not surprised any of us have not seen an Order Of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin or it's ribbon in a bar. The DPRK's focus is very much "Army First" and the Naval Force is not only tiny in comparison to the Land Forces but it is also split into two completely different forces due to the geography of the nation. Although the naval forces have always been competitively small there is a very proud DPRK naval tradition. I'm sure these orders were issued quite liberally during the Korean War and I'm sure some were awarded for "sinking the USS Baltimore" to name but one event. When we see all of these Military parades in Pyongyang they are all overlooked by Army and not Naval officers. Even Kim Jung Rok doesn't have the order..... It may be some time before we see one being worn in any time period.

For the "army first", I completely agree and this picture of Kim Il Chol in the uniform of an army vice marshal is a good example of the principle: before he was chief of staff of the Navy. Look at the ribbons, for me it's a sign, if even a senior naval commander have not the order. He received the Kim twice but not the Yi! I think not only that the Yi is obsolete but that the wearing is forbidden.
