looks fine...
...typical 1980's Generals uniforms. Ribbons are fine, probably did not have any combat in his history, but worked in the Warsaw Pact; some of the ribbons are from other WP nations.

yes...
..its good. These used to go for $250 when soviet colelcting first started, but have dropped way down. I guess we all did not relize how many there were when we first started buying and collecting.
I was once told that there were more living generals inthe red army in 1985 then there were men in the entire standing british army! DD |

I am afraid the story about the number of generals, however amusing, is not true. Post-war Russian generals umbered ranged in the 1000-2000 area though this does not include retired general's who potentially could have added up to 1000 more.
I am no expert on the UK military but I am sure it was always several hundred times larger than this. Shawn |

About this general's tunic: the school badge seems like a post- 1961 badge (it's a bit hard to make out in the photo, but I'm assuming it to be the blue diamond, red star and crest) for completion of a voyennoe uchilishche (cadet training school), whereas a general SHOULD be wearing at least a white academy badge. These blue diamonds were more seen on junior officers' tunics. Also, the officer's Combined Arms Qualification badge is usually seen only on a lower officer's tunic (lieutenant through colonel). I have NEVER seen this badge on the tunic of a general, neither in the thousands of photos I've seen, nor on the uniform of any of the hundreds of Soviet generals I've seen in real life, travelling on the Moscow subways in Soviet and post-Soviet times. I have a feeling that it is a lower-ranking badge scorned by those of flag rank as beneath their position.

Hi Doug, Vikingraider and others; I would like to know a detail about the common general service unfiorms.
I've got 2 of these, with slight variations. The first one has been worn, with buttons of 1981, classic brown tobbaco cloth, a little ribbon bar with service homleand 3, classic traces of wear. The inside silk clothing has a colour next to light brown havana... The second tunic comes from Ukraine, by a good and reliable friend, it is brand new, no traces of wear, certainly unissued. Identical to the first described, all buttons of 1982, tag of voientorg (the big "M" with a little star), sewings, cloth, embrodery... The inside silk clothing is this time light green. My doubts started when I discovered this US firm using national arms of Ukraine, which sells ukranians repros of all kinds...so could you tell me the risk my second tunic is a recent repro and not a soviet unissued? or I simply have a 1980' variation? thanks by advance! sebastien
