Tal thought it was time to show the whole Golant group on the forum and I agree. It is not just a nice group with lots of unusual paper. It is also a part of the history of the forum. As far as I know it is the only group united with the help of other forum members. In this thread I ‘ll show what the group consists of in chronological order. But enough with bad English it is time to show the pics.

The first thing, and oldest, is the passport. It was issued in 1933 in Leningrad.

A strange thing that came with the paper work is the “Udarnik” document. It is issued to the “neftezavodstroy” (oil factory worker?) Vladimir Yakovlevch Golant. At first I thought it was to a brother. But it could also be that the one who filled in the document missread/heard Golant’s name. A third explanation could be that the factory was a place that did not like Jewish people. So Golant called himself Vladimir to blend in. But all of this is just speculation of what could be a simple misstake. Anyway the Golant the booklet was issued to had 100% attendance.

More to come...

The next document is a ID as correspondent at the publishing house “United Magazines & Newspapers”, at the Moscow Daily News. It was issued in 1935 in both Russian and English.

Shortly after this Golant is swept up in the beginning purges of the 30s. But he is lucky and only spends a short time in exile in Kazakhstan. He saved the papers that let him return to Leningrad. They can be found here:

More coming..

Next point in time Golant is visible is July 1941 when he is in service of the army. His war record is found in his officer of the reserve ID.

For his service he got:

Order of the Red Star
Medal for Military Merit
Leningrad 250 years

All the other jubilee medals are missing from the group. I think some seller did not see them as important and wanted to sell the ww2 part. This is why I got the medals and the rest of the paper work went elsewhere.

Here are his medals and some document:
Red Star and medals
Document for Vienna and Leningrad + Special document for Vienna
Inside the document for capturing Vienna.

*edit* More to come. But I will have to post that tomorrow*end edit*

After the war Golant continued his career as a journalist, this time at the Moscow news as their Leningrad correspondent. His ID is dated 1949 but he did not have that much use for it. In 1949 the paper was closed down and remained closed until 1956. Today it can be found online at: http://english.mn.ru/english/

After scanning the military ID I noticed even more info on him. My Russian is far from good, or even acceptable. But I think this is about him working/studying at Leningrad University, historical faculty.
At university he completes the lower doctor’s degree: “kandidat nauk” in history, for which a minimum of three years is needed. Maybe Golant was an University teacher that took extra work as a journalist and translator. More research is needed.

Moscow News ID
The part about schooling in his Military ID.
His “kandidat nauk” diploma and a copy of it.

Apart form his academic studies he was also a translator of books. I found his name as a translator at a Russian SF-site. The site said he had translated books written by Arthur C. Clarke, Brian Aldiss and Hal Clement. He probably translated other books as well, but these authors were mentioned.

He was also a member of the Union of Soviet writer. This membership gave him access to the literature fund. As far as I can tell this fund was a source of income for cultural workers. He had a membership card to the Geographic Society.

In 1974 Veniamin Yakovlevich Golant passed away. About 30 years later his documents would be reunited here on this forum. Strange things happen, sometimes even stranger than science fiction...

That is all of the documents. If you would like to add any info to Golant’s life please do so. If you want better or other scans let me know and I’ll see what I can do.
