Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.

Hi all,

I need some advice regarding two Red Banners. One of them was originally a screw back and converted to a suspension variation and the other is a second award suspension variation but a screwpost was soldered on its back (god knows why...). What would you guys recommend me to do?

Research one of the RBs by serial number and see if the others line up with the research. If so, no need to remove solder of others.

The second award is being Researched as we speak. But has anybody have experience with removing the solder? And why would somebody add a screwpost to a suspension order? Questions, questions...

There may be a hundret reasons why somebody put a screw on a hanger Red Banner.

- prestige
- easier to wear and so on.

I have historical pictures were you can clearly see that soldiers put a screw on a hanger suspension.

best regards
Andreas

I would only try to remove soldier from the serial number, so that the number is readable. Mybe a juwelier could do this.

Thanks guys! I think ill do that only; removing some of the solder. I hope it is tin because that would be more easy to remove I think. Maybe remove the solder of the screw back so that the later attached loop will be removed and it will be a screwback once again.

I wouldn't be surprised if a good jeweller would "fix" everything for you for about $50.

I had some pieces that fell apart in transit that my jeweller repaired for me for a good price. Best of all he had all the correct tools on hand which would have been a bit more problematic for me.

The receipts are also good for the story of the piece (or resale).

Hi,

I also think that these soldered items do look ugly; even, if the solder is a part of it`s history. Generally I prefer chemical solutions, because heat and drilling it off may damage the enamel or the piece itself. Unfortunately the metal usually used for this kind of conversion is lead; and there isn`t a good procedure to do so, except long-time measures BTW: I wouldn`t give the piece to anyone else to fix it for me - just exercise with chemicals and tools using coins, etc. and then do it by yourself; there is no other person but the collector, who will treat it the way it deserves !

Jens

Thanks Jens,

Would you say this solder is lead?
