Lavrinovich, Vatslav Bronislavovich, Major-General, 23rd Army

A recent acquisition of a Red Banner of the RSFSR group (and it should, of course be "RSFSR" not "PSFSR" in the thread title - doh!)

1- RB RSFSR - type 1 (? - but with "work" on the back-plate?) - 10825 on both badge and backplate

2- 10 Years of Ws' and Ps' Red Army - 15126 - type 1, also with some repair to suspension

With documents - many documents - RB award to Vatslav Bronislavovich Lavrinovich, Commander of 9th Platoon, 209 Vitbesk Rifle Regiment, for actions in the fight near Uzbekovo on 15 June 1919.

"EXCERPT

"From Decree for 209/8th Turkistan Rifle Regiment of 15 July 1920, $29 Paragraph 1, regarding the combat personnel.

"I announce the copy of the Decree for the 1st Army, #210, of 6 July of this year for the administrative department.

"Paragraph 1. Based on the RVSR [Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic] Decree on 1919, #511 concerning the decree #2322 of the same year, the following servicemen are awarded the Order of the Red Banner for their combat feats:

"2. Commander of 9th Platoon, 209th Vitebsk Rifle Regiment, LAVRINOVICH Vatslav Bronislavovich.

"On 15 June 1919 during the fight near Uzbekovo comrade Lavrinovich commanded 9th Platoon of 209th regiment. He skillfully led his platoon on the right flank of the battalion combat order, inspired his men by personal example of courage, and managed to withstand and repel an enemy attack. After intensive artillery preparations using heavy and light artillery the enemy launched a second attack. [Lavrinovich] without regard to his life stood firm as a true warrior, put himself in the most dangerous spots, and held the position. The enemy desperately attacked for the third time in his sector and got as close as 40 paces from his position. At that point Comrade Lavrinovich shouted 'Hurray' and jumped out at the enemy, leading his company and the entire battalion. With a lightning and powerful bayonet charge he broke the enemy resistance and turned it into a panicky flight. During the pursuit Comrade Lavrinovich was all the time at the head of the infantry line. When the enemy made an attempt to stand near the villages of Bol'shoye Utyashevo and Zelim-Karamovo, he was on both occasions the first to throw himself before the enemy and continued to lead the pursuit of the destroyed enemy troops.

"Commander of the 1st Army Zinov'ev.

"Member of the Revolutionary Military Council Paskutsky.

"Chief of Staff Shefolovich.

"True copy: clerk [signed]"

A nice group photo (what does the banner say?).

He is in front, marked, detail scan to follow.

A closeup on the chap I think is Lavrinovich (so marked?), wearing his RB.

And a fine revolutionary chap he seems to be!

The man in 1932

From one of the many ID cards in the lot, the man in 1932, wearing the same broken Red Banner (but with a photo boo-boo on his same broad nose).

Based on materials in the file, it took him a long time to get the documentation on his Red Banner. (We can understand THAT?)

On 6 February 1941, his award booklet was issued for a 1 May 1930 award of the Red Banner.

The first page spread.

Ed

And the third page of the book.

RIP

And a closeup

Other documents in the file indicate that he was posthumously awarded an Order of the Red Banner by Decree of the Presidium of 6 February 1942 (which, of course, would not have been actually issued).

Other papers show his widow struggling as late as 1946 to maintain her pensions, allowances, and ration cards (and this may help to explain the assembly and survival of this wondrous documentary collection).

This is just the tip of the 6-inch iceberg, but I'd welcome comments from those more knowledgeable than I. Much research yet to do. . . .

Wow, what an awesome group! I hope you show more of it. Is the nut on the 20 year medal numbered to the award book? I was wondering why the medal's ring was cut given that he died before the order to change suspensions. Seems like the family would have just left the early suspension alone or maybe the original was damaged in the incident that led to his death causing someone to fix it before returning it to the family.

You probably already have this info but here's his entry from the Soviet General's list:

Lavrinovich, Major-General Vatzlats B. (1894-1941):
41 : General Officer Commanding Tank & Mechanized Forces 23rd Army
41 : Killed in Action

All the best,

Doug

As thanks for the comments to date, and in anticipation of more, here are a few extra photos.

VBL and friends, with machineguns

And with pistols

And with horses

And even more horses

But VBL eventually gets a car

Which he shares with his friends

Now for some photos which may be of more interest to our cousins who are "into" uniforms:

VBL in 1931

(Sorry it is so small, but less that 51200 bytes is a real challenge!)

And one year later, in 1932 (which you've seen as part of an ID book page-spread already)

And in 1935

And 1936

And the last (living) photo in the file, from the 1941-issued awards book (a closeup of what you've seen before)
