A late contribution to this thread is better than none at all.. This is me beside a rock, not in Russia but in Sweden! Not far from this inscription was a camp for Soviet internees during WW2. To keep them busy they were sent to build a road, in the deep forest of Vaestmanland. Just beside the road, days before they left, someone did this inscription to comemorate the work and their stay here. The inscription is rather crude but you can see: CCCP 1944 and the star, complete with hamer and sickle.
Many russians spent time in camps in Sweden, some sources say 4000. Most escaped from camps in Norway and Finland, but some came from other places. For example in 1941 two minesweepers came over when their base in Estonia were captured by the germans. Going to Kronstadt was too risky and the crew desided to head for Sweden, minus the political officers. I think they were the only regular troops that came directly to Sweden. /Kim

A few years ago before I came to the conclusion that the only way I was ever going to climb K2 was going to be via a great deal of beer and alot of imagination.
