Order of glory issue dates

Does anyone have a list of order of glory serial numbers and dates of issue that they have compiled?

I have a few order of glories I would like to roughly date with a view to getting them researched at a later date.

The details of them are:-

3rd class 160523, 245214, 275012, 338025
2nd class 37881

Thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark
Here are some dates and numbers from my small collection of Glories:

Order of Glory (3rd Class)
98852 05/08/44
99691 01/08/44
139464 14/06/44
263859 09/02/45
292813 26/03/45
328762 31/01/45
375700 07/03/45
386590 13/02/45
413552 05/08/45
675580 23/02/45
782702 06/08/46

Not so easy to predict the date from the number!

bye

McL

McL,
Thanks that's a big help. That's more numbers than I could have hoped to expected.

The numbers jump about a bit don't they!

I have a few order of glories one of which always struck me as being thinner than the rest. I bought a pair of digital callipers today and decided to measure the thickness at the star tip.

it measured 1.4 mm

I measure my other two order of glories in the same way and got a reading of 1.88 1.89.

I'm a bit confused because as I know this should only occur in 2nd class orders.

The award shows some wear and looks ok in every respect apart from the thickness.

The sn is 160523

Anyone any ideas?

Here's the calliper measuring the tip.

Here's my only theory on why it's the order is so thin.

I have a order of glory 2nd class where the enamel has fallen out of where the star is and underneath there is no gold plating. This means that they were enamelled first and then plated.

Since the measurement falls into the thin measurements of a class two is it not possible that some class 2's were then used as class 3's rather than being gold plated?

Like I say it's the only theory I have!

comments and opinions are welcome!

Mark

I have spoken with Paul McDaniel about this issue, as I had a thin Glory 3rd Class in my collection before I recently sold it. Our opinion is that its just a mint mistake, where these thin Orders never made it to the 2nd Class bin to be plated. I have seen about 5 of these over the years so its not totally uncommon to find these.

Just my opinion,
Ed

Ed,

Thanks for the reply, it makes sense.

Did Paul indicate if he would mark this as an official variation?

Hello,

this is probably directed at Alexei more so than others, since I bought this order from him...

but how would I go about
a) researching my order in general,
b) its owner
c) what was the order awarded for
d) and when?

I will attach 3 pics...

Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you,

Eric

I agree that some of the plated 3rd class orders are very convincing.

I personaly would go for the thin version of the 2nd class.
Third class glories do not come in a thin version (apart from a very small number which surface from time to time).

This way you have a better chance of buying a genuine order.

see this post for more details on thin 3rd classes.

Glory 2nd class Reverse Border

I'm abroad at the moment so can't access any reference books, can someone give me some advice regarding the Order of Glory 2nd Class with reverse border.
I have been offered one with serial number 4. Would this type be in that serial number range? I can't remember which range McDaniel advises for these.
The seller is asking quite a lot for it but if genuine I would expect that.
I won't buy until I've had it authenticated but I won't be able to arrange this until I return home in January 2003.
In the meantime I would appreciate anyones opinion on it and an estimate of what would be a fair price to pay for it if genuine.

The lowest observed number for this variation - 21, the highest – 1773. If it were original, s/n 4 would be the lowest observed… I observed much more fakes than originals. Could you request a scan of this order? I’ll be able yo tell with high accuracy if it’s original or fake.

Rather a bit late in the thread, but I went through my collection of Glory 3rds one day, and found about 15 of the thin variation (out of about 300) So, given that, we could say that maybe around 5% were thin variations? (I'd bet fewer, however...)
