Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
Here is an example of the less frequently seen two ribbon device.
Viktor here is sporting his 4 award ribbons in about 1947 long before someone thought it'd be a great idea to bombard him with commemoratives.

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
Here is one for Coast Guard Paul.
A late 1960's or early 1970's Double "Victory", Combat AND Labour Medals bar. No Umalatova to be seen! I believe this is a bar that belonged to a (female) nurse and I may just have more of her group to go with it later. (Yes second and third ribbons are out of place)

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
I will share more when I have the means to share don't you worry.
I have found that the most common "doubles" are nurses. They were able to do 3 years in "Civilian" hospital (looking after combat and civilian sick) and the 6 months "Combat" medic service and still have time to play with. I suppose they could have even more time left over if they started off as a combat medic, got wounded out of service and then became a civilian nurse. Some of the most "random" groups are to Medical personnel.

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
I have had some trouble finding ribbon bars for my Border Guard collection because, without documentation, the only ribbon that will indicate service in the Border Guard/Frontier Troops is the "Medal for Distinguished Service in Defense of the State Frontier". So far, I've found two; both of the "sew-on" type.
This first example is somewhat "rode hard and put up wet"- well worn. No GPW service indicated; entered service prior to '65; put in at least 20 years.

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
This next Border Guard ribbon bar is a bit more interesting. Two orders (Red Star and Badge of Honour) and the Lenin Centennial; entered prior to 1965 but no GPW service; 40, 50 and 60 years Armed Forces (may have qualified for the 40 Years GPW to go along with the 20 Years he's showing) and at least 20 Years of Irreproachable Service. The final two awards make this set kind of interesting: the Romanian Order for the Defense of the Country (2nd Class) and the DDR Brotherhood in Arms Medal (Silver Grade). This may indicate a Securitate and Stasi connection... who knows?

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
When I was in the Navy, and ribbons were ordered to wear, you had to wear at least your top 3 awards (if you had 3, that is). Big racks of ribbons can be a hassle on daily wear. I'm wondering if this next set is an example of a "pared-down" ribbon bar for daily wear.
This is an MVD bar as indicated by the "50th Anniversary of the MVD" award in the second position (the only other award which will indicate an MVD ribbon bar is the "Medal for Distinguished Service in Defense of Public Order"). A Lenin Centennial in the first position and three service medals (10, 15 and 20) follow, obviously qualifying the wearer to a number of other jubilee-type awards.

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
In the SU it was obligatory to wear all ribbons. It could happen that a person would not wear all, but it was a rarity.
This bar probably belonged to a militiaman - they ussually didn't get too many medals. I even remember a part from one soviet crime story by Weiner brothers - a militia officer (colonel, if I remember correctly) says that he got more awards forhis 3 years of army service during the GPW than for his 30 years of service in the militia |

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
Here is Guy Siner of 'Allo! 'Allo! fame wearing a bar (on the wrong side) whilst portraying a parody of his famous character, faux fascist Austria's leader who attempts to kill George W. Bush in episode 4 of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's (yes the South Park guys) That's My Bush!
Obviously just a cheap prop that found its way on to a uniform. Siner's role is very unusual as he speaks only in German and is not subtitled in any way even though he has some substantial scenes.

Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.
Hiya guys,
I like collecting the 1950s-1970s plexiglass ribbon bars--they solid feeling, and are all different as they were individually / workshop made. Here are a couple of "War and Peace" ribbon bars--from recipients who both served in the war and were also recognized with awards after the war. Here's a recipient who served in the war, judging by the VOG ribbon, the 1970 War Vet Ribbon (lower right), and the OPW 1 class ribbon; he was also distinguished with an Order of Red Banner of Labor and an Order of October Revolution. This must have been a pretty senior apparatchik! |
