System to recognize exceptional merit to Cuban
and foreign Workers

The Cuban state has established this system to recognize exceptional merit to Cubans and foreigners, made ​​in their respective fields and their activities in favor of the principles of peace and international solidarity and the struggle of peoples to achieve their independence and full sovereignty.

The referral system is governed by Law No. 17, dated June 28, 1978, Decree Law No. 30 of December 10, 1979 and the Statute for each of the Honorary Degrees and Orders, and the Regulations of the Medals and Awards, adopted by the Council of State on December 12, 1979.

Any Award or Honorary Title "means issued on behalf of working people in recognition of outstanding achievements made ​​by Cubans "and also may be granted to agencies, organizations and institutions, military units, economic units, cities and towns, both Cuban and foreign that are worthy of such recognition. (Law 17/78, Articles 2, 3, 4 and 5)

The Awards

a) ORDERS (among these are the ORDER "LAZARO PENA", I, II and III degrees.
b) MEDALS (among these are the MEDAL " Jesus Menendez "MEDAL" INTERNATIONALIST WORKER "and the Medal" FEAT WORK . "

In addition to the Awards (Orders and Medals), the system includes honorary degrees, according to the law that creates, can be:

TITLE " HERO OF THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA , "with its corresponding MEDAL" GOLD STAR ", which will be given to individuals, cities and towns, Cubans and foreigners, which is given the title " Hero of the Republic DE CUBA "as its flagship representative. (Decree Law No. 30/79 Cap. IV, Article 6, paragraph 1).

TITLE " HERO'S WORK THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA , "with its corresponding MEDAL" GOLD STAR OF LABOR , "which will be delivered to people, Cuban or foreign, which is given the title" Hero of Labor of THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA , "as its flagship representative (Decree Law No. 30/79 Cap. Both the Awards and Honorary Titles are created and granted only by the State Council.

There are also distinctions, recognized in Article 9 of Law No. 17/78, in defining badges that are not granted by the State, granted to citizens in recognition of outstanding merit or attitudes, mainly in services performed during an extended period of several years.

The awards for years of service are awarded by national trade unions, together with the bodies of their branch or sector.
