Matt,

Thanks.

I know what you mean
My HP costed about the same price as your Canon, and I really regret the performances I could get with my old Scanner...

Scanning problems

Hello,

I had the same scanning problems with my old scaner (3 years old).
Only the portion of the order touching the glass is focused, the rest is out of focus/unclear!
So with hope I bought a new Canon Scan Lide. But the problem is still the same.
So I am still frustrated und use my digital cam for pictures.
Maybe someone knows a Scanner model.

regards
Andreas

Scanner Recommendations

I was wondering: Does anyone have a scanner that they recommend that is adept at scanning the reverse of Soviet screwback awards?

I used to own a Canon CanoScan that did a beautiful job of scanning, but the platen was broken during a move. A similar fate (the platen clouded) befell my replacement Canon. I then moved on to an HP which did a horrific job of scanning screwback awards, so I replaced that with an Epson Perfection 4180 Photo. Unfortunately, this latter scanner also does a pretty terrible job of scanning screwback awards. Not being made of money, I can't waste too much more money buying random scanners and trying them out.

For all of you with scanners, who out there has one that is usable for scanning the reverses of screwback awards, without blurring out anything but the end of the screw?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations...

Dave

I've got an Epson Stylus CX3200 that I've had for a couple years and it does everything quite well (or at least it used to, it's getting old and tired now).
I've attached 2 scans I just did as a test with an ORS.
The first scan is untouched, the second is brightened in Photoshop. I think I can also brighten it using the scanner's software but haven't tried that in a while (since Photoshop does it all at one time).
BTW, I use a yellow Tshirt as a background for two reasons. First, it seems to add contrast and second I can get the screwback to stand up straight instead of leaning to one side.

I use an HP and I'm satisfied with it, but I guess you need better resolution for your upcoming book. I don't need any T-shirt like Eric.

Guys,

Since Dave brought the topic, could we broaden it just a bit beyond simply "what scanner do you use".
I'd be interested in hearing how you actually USE the implement to get the excellent results that you show. So, Soviet, if you do not use a tee-shirt, how does the order stand on its screwpost ?

I use a Canon CanoScan 8400F. Whichever you decide to purchase, MAKE SURE it can scan 3-D objects. Don't assume this because it's not a feature that is included with every scanner. You know you've seen one of these 2-D only scanners when you see a scan of the reverse of an award and only the part that is pressed right up against the scanning table glass is accurately in focus, and the remainder will look like it's a mile away. If you don't plan on having it hooked up all the time, look for a USB connection rather than a parallel connection.

Regarding how I use mine, the 3-D scanners will have a lid that lifts up in back a few inches to accomodate 3-D stuff. I will set the award down with the screwpost touching the glass, then lay a piece of construction paper glued onto a piece of cardboard on top. This will balance the award long enough to LIGHTLY place the scanner lid on top. I scan at 600 DPI. Then I'll dump the raw scan into photoshop and use the rotate tool to adjust the scan so the award is perfect horizontally.

Scanner Recommendations

I use a Canon Canoscan D1250 U2F with no problems. For screwposts I grip the screwpost with Needle nose pliers and hold it in place while I lower the lid on top of the medal. Once it's set, the weight of the lid holds it in place and I remove the pliers and scan.

Best,
Doc
