Regarding those medals: The diplomas are OK, but none is related to the medals shown. (in state prizes of the first class the S/n of the medal and diploma are the SAME). The second doc is dated 1962, but the medal is BRAND NEW!

Morover - I am VERY suspicious regarding the state prize No. 3003 - NO WARE TRACES, PERFECT gold plating, gold plated screwplate with no markings, gold plated ring etc.

Tal,
Where did you get information "in state prizes of the FIRST class the S/n of the medal and diploma are the SAME"? As a matter of fact they are almost always different. And why the story with first class should be different from 2nd or 3rd?
I don't think excellent condition of the medal should be criteria to qualify as a fake. The prize medals were not worn every day and most of the original prize medals I saw were in almost mint condition.

Eugene,

The S/N on the medal and doc are the same on first class medals. I saw more than 15 examples, and was told so by VERY experienced collectors and some deallers.

It MIGHT not always the same, but certinally 1980's medals are.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding fakes: mint condition is of course not a distinct alarming sign. I pointed out this fact when the 2 medals were presented - the first class was worn, and 2nd - not at all.

Gentlemen,

Turning back to the issue at hand... I have seen several examples of genuine documented medals from different periods with matching serial numbers, which led me to a logical conclusion that they have to match. As simple as that. I also know a geologist, who had received his medal in the early 1970s, and if I remember correctly the numbers on his medal and in the document do match.

Tal,

It looks like you've never seen a genuine State Prize medal before, as this is exactly how authentic 2nd class medal was made - gold plated ring, gold plated screwplate, and no markings on the screwplate...

As for condition - Eugene said all about it - these medals were rarely worn - hence almost mint condition.

Medal looks 100% real to me.

Eugene....I have tremendous respect for your knowledge and your extraordinary contributions to this field of collecting in general, and to this Forum in particular. I raise this question NOT as a challenge, but as a legitimate inquiry brought up in a desire to obtain information.

Regarding the numbering of the State prizes and the accompanying award documents, I must confess that I would be very surprised if a matched set was the exception rather than the rule. I'm not sure that I would see the point of dispensing numbered prize medals and numbered award documents if the respective numbers did not match. I would presume that they would be prepared at the same time, and that the medals and the award documents would be blank as to particulars (the medals as to numbers, the award documents as to name of recipient, reason for award, etc. and I presume that the documents were pre-serial numbered?). As such, I am GUESSING that the process involed taking the next award document in line, that was pre-numbered, stamping the same number on the medal, adding the particulars to the document, and awarding them together. Of course, I could be WAY off base here.

I would love to be enlightened on the process in any way, by anyone who might be able to shed some light on the procedure.

Thanks to all!
