PQuigley,

This is a army hat/cap badge, most likely from the 1950~60's.

Yes, what Marc said. It's a nice enamel one but not that rare. Good for display if nothing else as they look much nicer then the later, alloy and paint versions. The versions previous had a seperately applied H&S.

Typical red star, I have loads of these. In fact, they are still being produced by Russian authorities, they are common and cheap.

This one looks from the older period, you will be able to tell which period its from by simply looking at it, the older ones look more plain, the new ones are more flashy, but they all have the same characteristics and size.

Hashspy,

This is a very interesting statement. Can you please explain in more details what you mean?

Well, aside from the massive number they produce for their massive parades, which use Soviet symbolism, a lot of soldiers are actually still being issued red stars for Ushankas, which go with thier regular uniform.

Most of the Russian military, while de jure has switched to new symbols, still de facto uses the old ones, nameley red stars and not just for the hats, but on their vehicles and so on.

Hahspy,

OK, that is clearer. However, you failed to notice one extremely important detail in our case: these stars are made of enameled brass; since the early 1960's, they were made of cold-enameled aluminum.

I did notice. What I am saying is that red stars, both old and new are common and that it is legitimate. My point was they didn't exit production.

I think its plainly obvious this is one of the older pieces, due to the construction, newer ones are flashy.

I have both new and old in my collection and he has pretty much the same as me.

Kindly show us specimens or facsimiles thereof that are still being produced as I am writing this, besides the type that RF sailors are using on their winter headgear nowadays. Belt buckles do not apply...

It is very interesting to me...

Hmm, well the most detailed version was from an RT report about the Russian defence budget, that I saw last year, which had a brief paragraph about them and showed some nice shots of them on the soldier's winterwear.

Aside from that, I guess you could try watching a video on their Victory Day parades.

I have some of the newer stars here, but there is nothing to tell weather they were produced in the USSR or the RF, since I know for a fact they entered production in the USSR and its allies before the collapse.

If you want, I could try to give you a scan, but remember that this dosen't mean they come from the RF, in fact, I think they come from the USSR.
