Badge "Excellent Cultural Patronage Of The Armed Forces Of The USSR".
Hi
Because this is my first post on the forum I might as well introduce myself. I’m a Swedish militaria-fan, with soviet militaria as nr 1. Soviet medals and orders are not my only weakness I also collect soviet helmets, badges, photos and some other stuff… with a small Swedish ww2 collection just in case the soviet militaria dry up :) The badge on the photos is said to be for military artist (I lost the exact description.) Has anyone seen it before? I looked threw my books and didn’t find any reference. Looks like post war with good detail and natural wear. Any ideas are welcomed! I believe this badge was awarded to civilian artists who help Army with cultural life (like free concerts to army units)

Thanks as well, I always wondered what that badge was...well made, attractive and only a couple of dollars
I have only seen this badge once and snapped it up, did not know what it was, but it felt great with history. Chris Last edited by CtahhR; 05-08-2013 at 11:15 PM. |

Kim,
I have sold a similar badge recently. I think it may be from the late 1930s. Alexei Last edited by Nota Bene; 09-16-2002 at 06:23 PM. |

Thanks for the help all!
Chris what is the number on your badge? The photo is not that sharp. Alexei do you remember what number the badge had? I haven't seen any other than my own before (not counting the ones on the forum). Perhaps it could give an idea on how many were issued... But it will of course be pure speculation :) /Kim |

Kim,
I don't remember exactly, but it was also in 1xxx range. BTW, my badge was exactly like yours, Chris's is a little different. Alexei |

Re: Badge "Excellent Cultural Patronage Of The Armed Forces Of The USSR".
These Badges are a little mysterious but they were not awarded by the Armed Forces but actually by the Central Committee Of The Trade Union Of Cultural Workers. They were originally issued (from the late 1950's onwards) numbered (with matching document) to members of the Trade Union but in the late 1970's the numbering ceased. I know at least 16,500 numbered examples were issued by the end of 1970, so continuing at that rate until 1991 they may be a total of 50,000 or more of them out there.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the lower numbered examples with "strange" fonts etc. are actually unnumbered later types that someone has tried to "improve".
