YM/\ - stands for Universitet Marksisma Leninisma - or University of Marxism-Leninism.

I would say that the red badges may have been offered for the graduates with high honors. Sort of like the red diploma versus a blue one when graduating other educational facilities.

I think this is the best one I've seen yet from this University!!!

There are rays under the deeper and better blue enamel and it looks to me like an early variation.

Soon to be in my collection!

Does anyone know if the color has any significance?

To me it seems like:

White - Military
Green - Industrial/Machinery
Blue - Regular University
Red - Higher Learning - PHD type

This makes sense since some Universities have identical badges but with different colors... So depending on how far the student advanced he/she would get an appropriate badge!?!

Any thoughts?

Rusty.

Rusty

As I know, color means Major. For example: Technical Major (Science) is dark blue, Art Major is light blue, Political Major is red (of course), etc.

School Badge Color

Gentlemen,
I believe that the color depends on the customs and traditions of the particular ministry corresponding to the educational institution. Nonetheless, some basic Tsarist traditions appear to cross ministry borders: blue for basic level, white border for advanced degree (masters/doctors). My observations for ministry colors follow:

Ministry of Defense:
Blue - Basic comissioning School
White - Academy Level

Ministry of Internal Affairs
Blue - Basic level
Red - Advanced level

Civil
Green - Railroad (later periods), Agriculture
Red - Medical
Blue - RR, technical
Light Blue - Pedagogical
White border - Advanced Degree

This is my Universiteta Marksism-Leninism badge... wow they are so beautiful, one of the nicest of them all.
The only problem with mine is that I think the screwplate is not original, it fits perfectly on the screw but it is an estonian plate as it says T-K <ÜHENDUS> on it.

Does anyone know if the UML still exist?

Lenin looks like a grumpy old man on your badge!

Her's a pic of the 3 that I have.

Patrik,

Very nice Badge indeed!

Does anyone know if the UML still exist?

Well, I guess not ;) but that's obviously only a guess!

Rusty,

As a matter fact, comparing Patrik's pic with yours, Lenin looks indeed bizarre on his Badge!
I know these UML also existed in Mongolia, for example (and they also have one of these Badges, thought no Marx or Lenin heads on it), so maybe Patrik's Badge is the Estonian version, as he mentions his screwplate is Estonian!

Just my two cents...

If my was an Estonian SSR version, I think the letters should have been UML (not cyrillic) ... My guess is that someone lost the original screwplate and replaced it with what was available.

Lenin looks quite angry on mine, but not as angry as in the pic, it is because of improper photo-flash usage.
