Badge "For Extended Service".
I'm not quite sure of the title or translation.
One Russian books calls them: ЗА СВЕРХСРОЧНУЮ СЛУЖБУ which comes out as: For extra urgent service. I'm assuming these are for years voluntary service as opposed to conscripted service. Kind of a reward for career noncom? BTW, Igor calls it an "Extended Service" badge. Anyway, here's the two I have; Red Army on top and Navy underneath. The Army badge seems to be heavier and might be brass while the Navy one is aluminum or a similar metal. Note the Army one has real enamel and the other paint. This leads me to believe one is of an earlier vintage than the other. Also note the makers mark on the reverse of the lower badge. Avers8 description: "Signs for extra urgent service. The USSR #146 from August, 1st, 1957 have been founded by order МО signs for extra urgent for Aircraft and navy fleet Land forces. One sign for all time was thus provided, suspension brackets with a designation of years of extra urgent service were replaced only. Signs are produced from a brass, 38 х60 mm. Fastening on a pin." Note the numbered pendants: The Army badge's reads 19 & 20 while the Navy's reads 10 & 25. This I attribute to the Navy's pendant really belonging to a Parachutist's jump badge. Also note the pin mounting system on the reverse. While similar the Navy's is very standard and common while I've not seen the type on the Army badge before.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
Very nice. I like the army one the best - always thought the Soviets were a little too proud of their navy but seemed to have the least attractive awards, but that's just my opinion. (They did have the best uniforms though.)
Could the translation be: "For critical/essential/vital service"? I think "critical" is the closest literal match but "essential" sounds better. As for the numbers, did they just flip them around when they reached the correct number of years? I'd really like to see you post some of your badge collection (framed ones) in "How to display Soviet awards."

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
Ah, I see. Mine are in cases and grouped loosely, not set in place in a shadow box yet and take up four shelves of a book case that used to hold books (which are now stacked neatly next to the book shelves). The only exception are my KGB badges which are in a shadow box. I'm doing the frontier guards badges in a similar set up this weekend - I hope.:D

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
Here's another one. An enamel version with the standard pin attachment.
Note the lack of the attachment loops. Very strange. Ain't seen one like that yet. If they've been removed it hasn't been in the recent past as any scratches down there are not fresh.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
"Extended Service" is the best translation. All physically capable, male Soviet citizens were required to do their enlisted service.
You are correct in that these badges were for those enlisted soldiers who continued service beyond the mandatory term. |

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
What do the pendants indicate? The number of additional months or years?

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
It's my understanding they represent years of service, not months. But I can't say for sure.

Re: Enlisted long-service badges
Thank you. Do you know if there were some kind of 'ersatz' badge for the long service medals?
