Price?

I've paid for this Order $95.00 in 2001.
Is it good price?

The price is almost 400 USD now, so you do the math ;)

October Revolution

Hi,

I have a very unusual Order of the October Revolution No. 398, It is fully Gold plated from mint and has been authenticated by Paul MacDaniels who has never seen one either.
Does anyone out there have any info on it?

Cheers,
Tony.

Hi Tony,

Stupid question...what did Paul's authentication say for this specimen? I think that's the lowest number I've ever seen..

Hi Tony,

Interesting. Could we have better scans of it? These seem coming from several sources...
Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Fantastic..she's a beauty Tony..thanks for sharing. I think his opinion nails it on the head. I've seen color illustrations of the "Gold" Order of the October Revolution. Never seen a real one before.

I also read that it was gold plated everywhere (including the rays of the star), but the pentagon with the Aurora cruiser.
Hence, we often see this Order with traces of gold paint around the flag. I have one like this...

Art, you will find interesting the attached picture.
It is from a book you know well ;) : "State Awards of the USSR", published by "Izvestia", Moscow 1987.
Interesting enough is that this book (thanks Marc :thumbsup;)) has been made by the Department of State Awards of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. All photos in the book (1987 !!!! :thumbsup) are of real awards.

On the pic, you can clearly see that :
1. The Order is not entirely gold plated. See the flag with traces of gold paint.
2. the gold plating on the rays of the star is very thin, as it seems already to disappear on the right part of the order.

Art,

Both the star and the rays were gold plated. As Christophe mentioned, the plating seems to "melt in" after some time, hence leaving the impression of a gold plated star on silver rays.

Guys,

Exactly, that was my point. Typically these awards were gold-plated but the silver pentagon wasn't. The gold-plated silver on this award and the Order of Alexander Nevsky is notorious for playing the "disappearing act", so no suprise there. Tony's award was clearly plated all over on purpose. A very nice piece. The low number adds to the mystique. The first few dozen were awarded to high-ranking military officials and cities. I'm sure this one was awarded to someone or someplace well regarded.
