Fake KGB and "Egg" Badges
I think those are the most frequently faked badges of all (and for just 24.00 for the set it's a bargain, ask the guy whoe sell them on ebay...):

The quality is pretty bad, and the detail is low, just look at the numbers in the center!

Tal,
I must disagree. These are not fakes. Fakes are items made to deceive collectors, as opposed to copies. A legal copy would either have differences in details, special marks to identify them as copies, or be made of different metals. These are made in one of the Baltic states at a cost of about $1.50 a piece. I have sold at least 50 of them on eBay. Of course mine have a letter "F" deeply engraved on the back, just to avoid confusion :) Thought I'd post some scans of my collection: This "Honoured KGB Officer" badge was never actually meant to be a fake, not even a "space filler" in a collection, it is just a fantasy piece. Would make a nice tie pin, should cost $3-4. I can hardly call these fakes either. These crude copies of KGB anniversary badges were designed as inexpensive souvenirs or "space fillers". They are made of brass and hot enamel, "50", "60", and "70" are separately attached pieces. Thanks to my suppliers my "KGB" collection is growing - nice selection of fakes, space-fillers, and fantasy pieces. They are made of brass and Cu-Ni alloy, and are quite detailed. None has proper mint mark, which of course can be easily rectified. |

This "KGB Special Departments Badge" is a much better copy then the above. It is made of brass and hot enamel. Genuine badges are made of tombac or silver. This and the fact that there is no mint mark on the reverse actually makes it a legal copy, great to dress up that KGB uniform. This badge certainly presents danger to beginning collectors.
Screwplate by an Estonian company Roblen Ltd. that manufactures KGB and other Soviet badges. This company coins them as copies and sells them as such for DM1.90. Just make sure your "genuine" badge doesn't have one of those. |

Fake 1927 OGPU Badge
A very detailed coined fake. Just couple of minor problems - they made a brass copy of a silver variation, that is smaller, but has larger detail. Still letters "OGPU' are huge even for the silver variation, and this fake has no traces of wear or patina, one would expect from a badge this old. Also the swords at the bottom are bent. And curiously, they never enemelled it.

excuse
Hi folks
I'm using this as an excuse to post some new badges that I have picked up. Criminal Investigation circa 1924 and best OGPU Student 1923 (no 29). I have not found this badge (OGPU Student) in any book...has anybody got any information on it. I thinks it's ok..but it could be a fake...? I do not believe all badges were documented and I feel only the really famous KGB badges are faked. These badges are made of silver and are hallmarked....I can't see the commercial value in faking these but.....out to you.... Cheers Chris |

and
These are my early excellent workers badges GPU.
I admit the GPU legend on the bottom is a bit poor on the (V) but I think this is why they up graded it.. That is my opinion.....out to you Chris |
