врид and врио...

According to multitran.ru, "врид" and "врио" are both valid Russian language abbreviations that mean essentially the same thing. As Paul noted, they probably both appear in docs over time.

Now I know whe to turn to with my Russian language questions :)

Врид stands for временно исполняющий должность, which I guess would be more appropriate in the military context, and врио is временно исполняющий обязанности - most likely, a strictly civilian term. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

I can only muddle through...

I can only muddle through Russian. In theory, I'm supposed to be conversational or better. In reality, I barely make it through ordering dinner. I believe my mosg was meant to only hold one tongue beyond the one I so often wag. But... I know where to find answers, and I am often surrounded by countless native speakers. Now, if I could only learn to read that beautiful, old script...

If you are talking about the hand written Ustav or Poluustav, it's very tough, because shape of the characters may change depending of the neighboring characters.

Re: Glossary of Soviet Terms and Abbreviations

Depends on the context.

вдк - воздушно-десантный корпус

гв сд - гвардейская стрелковая дивизия

и с.бр - инженерно-строительная (?) бригада - not sure about this one.

Re: Glossary of Soviet Terms and Abbreviations

I think исбр is usually инженерно-саперная бригада (Engineer-Sapper Brigade).

1941-1945 . has a list with abbreviations (in Russian).

http://rkkaww2.armchairgeneral.com/a...s/OOB_abbr.doc and the excellent http://rkkaww2.armchairgeneral.com/a...n_military.doc are in both Russian and English.

Re: Glossary of Soviet Terms and Abbreviations

Thanks for the help. The abbreviations are on veteran badges such as: 8вдк/35гв сд and 4я и-С.бР. The websites will be helpful in the future, although my Russian is pretty dismal.

Re: Glossary of Soviet Terms and Abbreviations

What would be the meaning of "связного 1 го сабельного эскадрона"? It seems something like "Part of/member of/ the 1st Saber squad"

And what would be the English term for Сабельник (Sabelnik) = Saber-man?

Thanks! :thumbsup
