Another coat
I bet this is really easy for you guys but I'm a real newbie at all of this.
Question: Who wore these greatcoats? My own guess: Officers of the army (but then again, I might be way off) |

overcoats...
were issued to all services; the one in your photo is 1980's Major of the Army. Its a service overcoat, thus the boards match the color of the coat.

This coat seems to me to be the PARADE overcoat of a Soviet Army motor rifles major, not the service type. Its appears to me to be the proper steel-grey color, with matching steel-grey shoulder boards. A service coat would be of so-called dark grey (actually more of a grayish brown) fabric, and have green shoulder boards. Any orther opinions?

It looks STANDRD SERVICE TO ME. The parade ones I have seen had the parade boards and nicer collar insignia. Could be worng, not really big into 1980's $15 overcoats.

According to the 1988 uniform regulations, the parade coat is normally worn with steel-grey shoulder boards, and collar tabs without gold edgings, the gold parade boards and gold-edged collar tabs being worn ONLY in parades in Moscow, and those in capitals of the Soviet Republics.

Well, then I guess it is a PARADE overcoat and not a SERVICE overcoat; also explains it as I have ONLY seen them in MOSCOW.

The woven gold shoulderboards were also to be worn in parade dress uniform in Hero cities, too, such as Leningrad, correct? And I don't think the long collar tabs used on the parade dress greatcoats had the gold edging, except for generals and marshals.
