Here is a late 1930's hand book which was prolifically used by German Forces during Operation Barbarossa and subsequent actions.
It was produced by the Eastern European Institute In Breslau.

Despite looking rather innocent it has a military terminology section and many items that would be completely redundant in a holiday situation or in conversation.

We start with the index and Morning Toiletries.

Nice to see these fellow northern Europeans explain Я = Ja and Й = J and Ж does not.

The other languages available in the series are all important for communication with potential allies or occupied peoples.

Let me disagree . If you knew german langage, you would find it quite logical, because their letter "J" letter doesn't do the english sound "zh". In our evil roman langage, i.e. french, the Ж has its french equivalent in sound and letter...

in my good old Harraps for learning russian (english author) the Ж is traduced with the english "zh", curious isn't it?
