How to store award books?

How do you people store your award books (both order and medal books)

I decided today to move all the books from their former storage place (a metal box) to a more easy-to-find photo-album, however the books are so thick that the album can not be closed at all and can not be stored in a normal bookshelf.

How do you store them?

I just keep them in a separate stack, similar to your metal box.

If a book belong to a group then it's kept in small plastic envelope together with the group.

Not the best system, but works fine for me.

I also put my books in a photo album and got the same problem as Tretov.
But I started to use larger photo albums, the ones that measure around 9"X12" and have rings like binders book. It contains sheets which can hold 4 pictures(4X6) on each side of the sheet. So, I put 4 books per sheet side and I just use few sheets and remove the extra sheets. Like this I keep the album to a reasonable thickness.

In my case, one album is fine for all my books because I don't have a lot. But you can easily place 64 or more books in a single album this way.

Hope I was not too much unclear with my bad english!

I keep all of my order and award books with the group in a display frame (which you've probably seen). If the group isn't in a frame, I keep it stored, along with the documents and photos in a freezer Ziploc bag.

P.S. My computer won't let me view your movie... Real One tried to download the updates automatically, but couldn't find the right ones online...

Patrik,

Nice little movie

I use one of those larger binder books with rings, not exactly for photos but rather for students or offices, see what I mean? I can attach plastic sheets of different formats and sizes for different kinds of Docs. Right now I only have a few Docs anyway, but even if my collection increases in number, when this one will be full I'd get another one.
Have recently got a digital camera but don't know how to use it yet
When I will I can try to email you a pic if you wish.

Cheers,

Dolf

Award book storage

I find storing award books in binders works best for me. I place them in archival quality photo album pages. I store the red order books in pages that have 4 pockets. For folded card-stock certificates I unfold them and store in sheets that have two pockets.

I use a binder with plastic pages too.

In Canada, I was able to find some coin and stamp collection stores that sold a wide variety of different plastic pages - one pocket (good for the large campaign medal award papers), two or three horizontal pockets, four pockets and six pockets.

Using these I have been able to store everything from award books, diplomas, IDs, letters, etc. But I do have to use several binders as they get quite thick quite fast.

appearence, but what about safety?

Hi guys,
Looking at all these groups beautifly displayed, I always come up with a question - is it safe to display them like that. Different people come to your house - friends, mates, girls, electricians, neighbours etc. They all recognise that there is some value in these groups. Surely you all display thousands of dollars on your walls. They tell it to their friends etc.
Some of them might not be honest people. The question - aren't you are exposing yourself like that.
You can get insurance for your collectables (well, for me it's a problem - I have to provide an independant evaluation of my collection - who would do it in Melbourne??). But the money you'll get aren't going to cover your personal attachment to the awards you had, years of research and work etc.
I know a member of this forum who lives at a military base - he is pretty secure, although not 100 %. I live in a quiet area, I've got old neighbours and big glass windows. I don't feel so safe in here.
How should I store them let alone display?

Your thoughts please...
thanks

Leo,

you are right... It is hopeless... You should just sell everything and pick up a "less dangerous" hobby. I am standing by, waiting for the list of your items for sale.

Seriously though, you are right there can be 1000s of dollars' worth of items in one case. However, it is up to you to choose what you display to the public versus your "circle of trust" folks. Many of us keep the "Crown Jewels" in the bank (literally). I realize that we could probably start a whole discussion thread on pro vs against keeping items in the bank, but that is for someone else.

Some of us have alarm systems on their house... Some have a 130-pound Rottweiler on the premisces, etc.

It has to do with what you are comfortable with displayng.

I hope this helped.

On an off-chance that this is making you want to sell, contact me please.

Eric
